Digex's Former President of Web Site Management Division to Lead Sales and Distribution at Akamai Technologies
Mr. Galleher most recently worked at DIGEX, Inc., based in Washington, D. C., where he served as the President of the company's highly regarded Web Site Management Division until August 1998. Mr. Galleher joined DIGEX in March 1996, and went on to develop and implement the highly successful business strategy of providing complex web site management services to Forbes 500 and Web-centric corporations. Under his leadership, the DIGEX web site management division grew from 3 to 260 employees in 27 months. DIGEX customers acquired under Mr. Galleher's leadership included Allstate Insurance, Anheuser-Busch, The Economist, Forbes Magazine, J. Crew, Kraft Foods, Nike, Motley Fool, Red Herring Magazine, NetGrocer, Japan Airlines, Martha Stewart Living, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Microsoft, US Olympics, and VF Corporation.
"We are fortunate to have an Internet executive of Earl Galleher's stature joining Akamai," said Paul Sagan, Akamai's Chief Operating Officer. "As we intend to serve leading businesses on the Web, Earl's experience working with premiere corporate clients will help us to develop Akamai products and services that meet the expectations of the world's most demanding customers."
Founded earlier this year by a leading group of MIT scientists and Internet business professionals, Akamai has deployed the world's largest fault-tolerant network for distributing web content. The company's FreeFlowSM service is used to speed up the delivery of richer web pages, and allows web businesses with large audiences to serve them reliably and economically from servers located close to end users. Akamai is currently beta-testing FreeFlow with some of the largest sites on the Internet, including five of the world's most-visited web sites. The company's service trial began in January with a deployment of hundreds of proprietary content distribution servers.
"Akamai has unleashed a powerful solution to a daunting problem: provide reliable global content distribution that can withstand peak demand periods, and also function across bandwidth-constrained secondary networks," Mr. Galleher said. "I am confident that Akamai services will be implemented by all mission-critical web sites, augmenting the complex web site management services provided by ISPs."
In addition to Mr. Galleher, Akamai announced today that several former DIGEX Web Site Management Division employees have joined the company. Tony Falco, formerly Strategic Account Director with DIGEX Web Site Management, has been named Akamai's Director, Solutions Engineering and Professional Services. Reynold Harbin, formerly Senior Manager Professional Services with DIGEX Web Site Management, has been appointed Akamai's Director, Channel Partner Programs. Prior to DIGEX, Mr. Harbin served as Manager for five years with Andersen Consulting's Communications Industry Group in Washington, D.C. Furthermore, John Sconyers, formerly New England Regional Account Manager with DIGEX Web Site Management, has been named Akamai's Director, Account Management. All three executives will report to Mr. Galleher.
Mr. Galleher added, "I am excited to join Akamai, and am fortunate to hit the ground running with a great team. Together, we understand the challenges of content distribution over the Internet and look forward to bringing Akamai's FreeFlow service to the market."
Prior to working at DIGEX, Mr. Galleher was Director of Marketing at American Mobile Satellite Corporation, the FCC licensee that provides mobile telephone voice and data services via satellite to the North American market. Previously, he worked with Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems developing distribution channels for the newly emerging wireless communications industry. Mr. Galleher received his BA in Psychology from Denison University in 1982.
