Akamai Technologies Signs Agreement with Yahoo!
CAMBRIDGE, MA --- June 2, 1999 - Akamai Technologies, which operates a worldwide network for Internet content delivery, announced today that Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) has become a charter customer of the start-up firm's FreeFlow SM content delivery service. Yahoo!, a leading global Internet media company, chose Akamai to assist with the continued high-performance and reliability of its expanding global network.
"Yahoo! is very focused on providing its enormous, global audience with an optimal Web experience, and Akamai is committed to helping Yahoo! achieve this result," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO of Akamai. "Our FreeFlow service enables Yahoo!'s users to download content faster and protect against crowds that would typically crash other network solutions. Yahoo!'s 60 million worldwide users are already benefiting from the deployment of our technology."
"We are very pleased to be working with Akamai," said Farzad Nazem, chief technology officer at Yahoo! Inc. "As our global Web network expands, we must continue to lead the industry in performance and reliability. Akamai's technology is assisting us in this mission."
FreeFlowSM, Akamai's first offering, enables faster and more reliable delivery of rich Web pages from some of the most heavily visited sites on the World Wide Web. Currently, Akamai's worldwide guaranteed network consists of over 600 servers on more than 20 networks, and has a total capacity of 11 gigabits per second -- enough to support the peak demand of the world's top 25 Web sites combined. During May 1999, Akamai served an average of one-quarter billion hits per day and over 500 megabits per second during peak hours; however, these extraordinary volumes utilized only five percent of Akamai's total capacity.
Akamai first approached Yahoo! in January 1999 about becoming a trial customer of Akamai's Internet content delivery service, FreeFlow. During the first quarter of this year, Yahoo! implemented FreeFlow across selected portions of its network and discovered that Akamai's service improved performance by fifty percent, based on tests conducted in March using diagnostics from Keynote Systems. In addition, during the trial period, Yahoo! provided Akamai with important feedback on how to ready the service for widespread commercial availability. After FreeFlow became commercially available in the second quarter, Yahoo! signed an agreement with Akamai and began broad use of the company's service for fast and reliable delivery of various images and Web site content, such as banner advertisements and logos.
