CMGI and Akamai Strengthen Ties with Cross-Company Partnerships
ANDOVER and CAMBRIDGE, Mass., December 17, 1999 -- CMGI Inc., (NASDAQ: CMGI), the world's largest and most diverse network of Internet companies, and Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM), which offers global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content and applications, today announced a growing number of cooperative efforts to enhance the performance of company sites within the CMGI network. In addition, CMGI and Akamai announced that it is their intention to collaborate to develop new technologies to create and deliver dynamic content and applications that serve the growing interest of both companies.
By taking advantage of Akamai's FreeFlowSM service, CMGI is improving the speed and reliability of its Web properties' content delivery. CMGI-related companies currently partnering with Akamai include NaviSite, a leading provider of Web hosting and managed application services; AltaVista, a premier media and commerce network; 1stUp.com, a leading provider of ad-supported free Internet access services; and NaviNet, delivering high-performance, private-label Internet access services, as well as @Ventures portfolio companies Mondera.com and Furniture.com. Through a strategic technology partnership with Akamai, NaviSite offers customers access to an end-to-end content distribution system combined with application and server management services, and is the provider of Akamai's FreeFlow to CMGI companies.
Working together, several CMGI companies are collaborating with Akamai to develop new technologies that will provide intelligent decision-making capabilities at the edges of the Internet network to create and deliver dynamic content and applications. These projects will involve the joint development of applications to deliver and market services such as targeted advertising, dynamic page and content assembly, application delivery or usage research and analysis services, based on services now contained within the CMGI and Akamai networks. Akamai announced yesterday the introduction of its EdgeAdvantageTM platform that will enable applications to be delivered from the edge of the Internet, ensuring the same consistency and reliability available through Akamai's FreeFlow service.
Commenting on the announcement, David Wetherell, CMGI Chairman and CEO said, "Akamai has established a clear leadership role in delivering technologies that dramatically improve the speed and reliability of web sites. As the companies in the CMGI network grow in scale and scope, effective network performance and a continued positive user experience become even more critical issues. We look forward to an expansive relationship with Akamai that not only will provide benefits to the CMGI network today, but will also work to develop new technologies to support our mutual growth moving forward."
Akamai Chairman and CEO George Conrades commented, "As a recognized leader in today's Internet economy, CMGI represents a diverse and successful network of Internet companies. Akamai's cooperative efforts with CMGI will create a powerful relationship for enabling Web properties to experience enhanced performance, reliability, and functionality. It is clear that CMGI and Akamai share a common vision for advancing those technologies that will create a better Internet."
NaviSite's partnership with Akamai provides NaviSite's customers with access to an end-to-end content distribution system combined with application and server management services. The enhanced content delivery service, combined with application and server management, allows Web sites to offer powerful and engaging content -- without the expense of building unwanted infrastructure or large technical staffs. The agreement between NaviSite and Akamai has four distinct elements: joint network deployment; co-marketing; reselling; and technology exploration and development. NaviSite and Akamai will also integrate their management systems, allowing NaviSite to perform complete problem resolution management for all aspects of the NaviSite Content Distribution service.
NaviNet has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Akamai which contemplates NaviNet deploying Akamai servers to increase the speed and performance of the Internet access services NaviNet provides to ISPs. This arrangement provides NaviNet with tools to deliver content and applications at the edge of the Internet closest to end-users. The NaviNet Technology Platform, a unique network architecture that avoids Internet congestion and provides significant economies of scale, working together with the Akamai content and application delivery platform enables ISPs to offer high-performance access services while at the same time lowering their cost per subscriber.
