Companies to integrate Web site acceleration and content delivery technologies

Internet Commerce Expo, Boston, Mass., March 28, 2000 - Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM), a global provider of high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media and applications, and CacheFlow Inc. (NASDAQ: CFLO), a leading provider of Internet caching appliances, today announced that they have entered into a broad strategic alliance. The first element of the alliance includes a major initiative to integrate their caching and content delivery technologies to accelerate and optimize Web performance. The combined solution will help E-commerce and content sites better service online customers through enhanced performance, scalability and reliability. In addition to the technology integration, CacheFlow will also resell Akamai's FreeFlowSM service with its caching appliances.

Through the companies' joint development efforts, CacheFlow will incorporate an intelligent "Akamaizer" function into its caching appliances allowing enterprises and Web site owners to Akamaize content dynamically. This industry-first capability automates the process of distributing Web content and, in combination with Akamai's FreeFlow service and global network, ensures that content is delivered as quickly as possible to the end user.

"We believe this agreement proves that content delivery and caching are complementary, not competitive, technologies," said George Conrades, Akamai's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "There are tremendous synergies between our FreeFlow service and CacheFlow's caching appliances that will result in joint customers benefiting from the industry's foremost content acceleration infrastructure."

"Akamai and CacheFlow are both leading vendors in their areas," said Greg Howard of the HTRC Group. "This deal provides content sites new options in their performance differentiation. Sites that are seeking higher performance and scalability can accrue immediate benefits."

Combining Best-of Breed Technologies The CacheFlow appliance is placed between a content provider's Web servers and Akamai's globally distributed network of over 2,000 servers. The CacheFlow appliance fields the site's Web requests and 'Akamaizes' content based on site-specific policies. This content is then delivered via Akamai's FreeFlow service, ensuring an optimal end user experience.

The intelligence of Akamai's service is built upon sophisticated algorithms to locally deliver content that has been Akamaized. Akamai's algorithms monitor the Internet on a real-time basis, understand the location of the requesting user and make intelligent decisions about the best and most efficient Akamai edge server from which to deliver content.

CacheFlow appliances are fast, simple, reliable devices that integrate seamlessly into the network. The appliance is based on CacheOSTM, an operating system expressly designed for accelerating and controlling content delivery. When deployed in front of a site's server farm, the appliance offloads the infrastructure by handling up to 90%+ of user requests without taxing server and firewall resources.

"Intelligence and power at the network edge are the keys to high performance and scalability on the Internet," said Brian NeSmith, President and Chief Executive Officer of CacheFlow. "The integration between CacheFlow and Akamai allows Web companies to focus less on their infrastructure and more on their business. We are excited to bring enhanced value to our customers by adding a complete content delivery solution to our arsenal with Akamai's FreeFlow service."
