Akamai is first with wide-spread deployment of Web servers within distributed university/educational networks

INTERNET WORLD, LOS ANGELES, CA, April 5, 2000 -- Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high-performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media and applications, announced today that it has expanded its Web server deployment into the educational networks supporting hundreds of major universities across North America. Akamai's Accelerated Educational Network Program enables educational and university networks to deploy Akamai's servers in their points of presence at no cost. By placing popular Web content from over 550 Akamaized Web properties inside educational networks, Akamai is able to cut each network's bandwidth expense and serve content faster and more reliably to the university end user.

As an Akamai Accelerated Educational Network, universities leverage Akamai's revolutionary Internet content, streaming media and applications delivery services to offer new, dramatically enhanced opportunities for end-users. By placing servers close to end users, inside the university and educational networks, Akamai reduces the amount of bandwidth needed to deliver requested Web pages, rich content, and streaming media. Akamai's Accelerated Network Partners worldwide are serving more and more popular content requests to users with fewer router hops than even before.

"With the technology behind our FreeFlowSM Internet content delivery service having been conceived by top scientists at MIT, Akamai has realized the tremendous value that educational institutions play in the Internet space," said Jonathan Seelig, vice president of Strategy and Corporate Development at Akamai. "This program not only allows us to offer a compelling solution to individual universities, but also affords us the opportunity to expand our network reach into the majority of the largest universities ranked by campus enrollment. That allows Akamai's network to deliver popular content for Web properties that are reaching hundreds of thousands of university end users."

Representing many of the world's most heavily-trafficked Web sites, Akamai's customers are leveraging the wide spread deployment of servers into University and Educational networks. Combined, these networks make up an extensive percentage of Internet eyeballs, thus furthering the reach of "Akamaized" content delivered at the edges of the Internet. In addition, with today's educational networks built to handle the growing delivery of broadband content, Akamai's innovative content delivery services enable broadband users to be served rich media, streaming media and robust applications at the edges of the network. Akamai has partnered with best-of-breed broadband providers including cable, DSL and satellite, to deliver a better Internet to the broadband community.

With Akamai's massive deployment in the major University networks, it's content, application and streaming media services are reaching over 300 Universities throughout the United States and Canada. Those states and provinces include British Columbia, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

"In Ohio, helping students reach their educational and business goals on the Internet is our first priority," said Doug Gale, director of OARnet, which provides Internet connectivity to many of the Ohio colleges and universities. "By placing Akamai servers in our network, we have experienced much faster download times to our end users and have seen an improvement in meeting the demands of our fast growing network. We are pleased to join Akamai on the forefront of delivering a better Internet."

"The University of Houston had recognized the value of Akamai's program but were concerned with the resources required to deploy the servers and connect to the Akamai network," said Charlie Chambers, manager or Network Planning & Development at The University of Houston. "We quickly learned that the solution is truly 'plug-n-play.' We had the servers up and running in a matter of hours and Akamai was available to support us every step of the way. Now, we can confidently say that our network is cutting-edge and delivering at peak performance to our entire university community."

Akamai is continuing to welcome additional university and educational networks to participate in it's Akamai Accelerated Educational Network Program. Forward-thinking institutions can benefit from increased performance and lower bandwidth expense. As a no-cost solution it is easy to implement, and servers can be shipped, installed and operational in just a few days.
