Akamai and Digex Expand Strategic Alliance to Offer Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming Services
Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service will enhance Digex's offering, which has included the resale of Akamai's FreeFlowSM service, and will provide an even higher level of performance for Digex's managed hosting and e-business customers. The Digex Akamai FreeFlow service has gained rapid acceptance among leading Digex clients including JP Morgan, NSCDirect (a division of National Securities Corp.), PeoplePC, The Independent Traveler and I2Networks.
FreeFlow Streaming is built upon Akamai's EdgeAdvantageTM platform that uses sophisticated algorithms to monitor the Internet on a real-time basis, understand the location of the requesting user, and make intelligent decisions about the best and most efficient Akamai edge server from which to deliver content to the end user. In addition, FreeFlow Streaming incorporates Akamai's proprietary SteadyStreamSM technology that splits encoded broadcast signals into multiple streams sent across the Akamai network, and then recombines them at the edge of the Internet to recreate the streams in their original high-quality format. SteadyStream uses both satellites and the terrestrial Internet to seamlessly deliver streams to the edge with real-time decision and performance monitoring.
Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service is the latest addition to Digex's High Availability and Performance suite of offerings, which includes Digex Akamai FreeFlow, local and geographic load-balancing, Performance Testing, and Dynamic Fail-Over solutions. This entire product suite is dedicated to improving site performance, reliability, and scalability of Digex's customers' Web sites, while eliminating single points of failure and improving the end users' experience.
Digex customers have achieved significant performance improvements as a result of implementing the Digex Akamai FreeFlow service. For example, I2Networks, which develops and produces interactive Spanish- and Portuguese-language sports and entertainment Web networks, uses FreeFlow to provide its users around the world with reliable access to I2's media-rich content and special events.
"Even the best Web content can't keep site visitors engaged unless it is delivered in a high speed, high reliability and high quality format," said Carlos Luchsinger, CTO of I2Networks. "The Digex Akamai FreeFlow service helps ensure that our fans maximize their experience with I2Networks."
"Digex's strong focus on Web and application hosting for mission-critical Web sites has made them a very important partner for Akamai," said Earl Galleher, vice president of worldwide sales and support. "By offering FreeFlow Streaming to its customers, Digex is creating a best-of-breed solution that combines dependable, high-quality delivery of streaming media with a powerful suite of Web hosting applications. The result enables Digex's customers to realize near broadcast-quality streaming in all of today's popular formats, complete with the industry's only real-time reporting tools for streaming media."
"We have seen a sharp rise in demand among our customers for the kind of enhanced content delivery made possible by the Digex Akamai FreeFlow service," said Martha Gilbertson, vice president of product management at Digex. "The expansion of our strategic alliance with Akamai to add FreeFlow Streaming gives our clients the benefits of high-quality transmission of streaming content and optimal performance of their Web sites."
