Akamai and CacheFlow Strengthen Strategic Alliance
Boston, MA and Sunnyvale, CA -- June 26, 2000 -- Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), a global provider of high-performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media and applications, and CacheFlow® Inc. (NASDAQ: CFLO), a leading provider of Internet acceleration and content management solutions, today announced that Akamai will sell CacheFlow Internet caching appliances with its Internet content delivery service solutions. The combined solution strengthens content-acceleration infrastructures, helping E-commerce and content sites better serve online customers through enhanced performance, scalability and reliability.
"We entered into a broad strategic alliance with CacheFlow about three months ago, and we've been very pleased with the results of the relationship," said George Conrades, chairman and chief executive officer of Akamai, a supporting member of CacheFlow's Adaptive Content Exchange (ACE) initiative announced June 21. "Our combined solution puts the levels of intelligence and power at the network edge that our customers need to thrive in the digital marketplace."
CacheFlow and Akamai develop complementary solutions. CacheFlow's simple, reliable appliances locally store and serve the Internet content most often requested by users, while simultaneously monitoring the source of that content for changes. Akamai's FreeFlow service employs sophisticated algorithms to monitor the Internet in real time, understand the location of the requesting user and make intelligent decisions as to which of Akamai's over 4,000 globally-dispersed servers could most efficiently deliver the requested content.
Through an existing joint-development agreement, CacheFlow has integrated Akamai's "Akamaizer" software with its CacheOSTM operating system to automate Web-content distribution. When used in tandem with the FreeFlow service and deployed between a content provider's and Akamai's servers, CacheFlow appliances field the site's Web requests and route content to an Akamai server based on site-specific policies. As a result, end users receive content more quickly, and enterprises and Web-site owners benefit from unprecedented network performance and scalability while conserving server and firewall resources.
"We are pleased to add a marquee company like Akamai as another strong partner as we continue to focus on expanding our distribution channels," said Brian NeSmith, president and chief executive officer of CacheFlow. "Together, Akamai and CacheFlow offer a compelling content-acceleration solution that provides the value our customers want -- performance, intelligence, reliability, scalability and ease of installation and maintenance. We look forward to continuing to work with Akamai in developing content solutions for our broad, combined customer base."
