  • EdgeScapeSM service leverages Akamai's extensive Web knowledge-base and global network; offers content providers real-time network knowledge that can be used to increase the relevance of content served
  • Loudcloud intends to resell EdgeScape service
CAMBRIDGE, MA, June 27, 2000 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, today announced the general availability of its EdgeScape service - a new managed service, built upon Akamai's EdgeAdvantageTM platform, that allows content providers to determine in real-time the geographic location of the network and type of network from which users are accessing their Web site. By leveraging Akamai's core technology and global Internet traffic monitoring, customers can benefit from the EdgeScape service by serving more relevant content to attract and retain site visitors. Content providers such as Namezero.com and style365.com are among the early customers of the EdgeScape service.

Whether content providers are seeking to enhance the user experience by serving geographically relevant content, or saving customers time through streamlined site navigation, Akamai's EdgeScape service fulfills a need for content customization that today's leading e-businesses require. In addition to serving geographically relevant content, EdgeScape customers are able to serve customized content based on the type of network with which their users access the Internet. This allows content providers to selectively deliver high bandwidth content to users accessing the Internet from broadband networks such as cable modem or DSL.

Akamai customers intend to use the EdgeScape service for customizing content by country for international events, such as the Olympics or World Cup Soccer. By serving locally relevant content in the appropriate language, including coverage of a national sports hero or team, EdgeScape customers aim to improve Web site stickiness upon a user's first site visit, resulting in an enhanced online brand.

Namezero.com, enabling people and businesses to create an Internet identity and experience around a free dot-com domain name, is using the EdgeScape service to target online promotions to the appropriate international audiences. "Akamai's EdgeScape will enable us to tailor our service to meet the needs of customers around the world," said Frank Stanbach, CTO, Namezero.com. "By customizing our Web site content and promotions, we'll enhance customer relationships and maximize their online experience."

"Akamai's EdgeScape service creates a unique opportunity for style365.com to offer its marketing partners the ability to target consumers on a regional basis," said Charlie Windisch-Graetz, Director of Business Development at style365.com - the definitive guide to style online. "EdgeScape should help make the World Wide Web a little smaller."

EdgeScape Adds New Dimension to Web Site Success
With the introduction of Akamai's EdgeScape service, content providers can benefit from Akamai's fast-growing knowledge-base and global network in numerous ways. The EdgeScape service:
  • Delivers geographic country/region codes and network type of Web users to help Akamai customers tailor Web site content for increased user satisfaction and retention.
  • Saves time for Web users by streamlining site navigation and moving users one click closer to the "buy" button.
  • Intelligently directs broadband content to broadband users.
  • Helps content providers comply with the digital rights of licensed content.
  • Maximizes first impressions of new site visitors by serving customized content right from the initial visit.
  • Enhances content provider's brand by enhancing the user experience.

Akamai is uniquely positioned to deliver this service based on its industry-leading, global network of more than 4,000 edge servers - which constantly maps the Internet in real-time and correlates geographic and network information to IP addresses. The EdgeScape service is unique in the market in that Akamai customers can now receive information regarding the end user's country and, depending on the country, the end user's state or province. In addition, the EdgeScape service provides originating network information about the user's access, identifying dial-up and broadband networks. As a managed service, EdgeScape is easily implemented and the data is constantly updated. Akamai is also unique in its ability to leverage relationships with more than 160 network partners, which will continually enhance the EdgeScape database as the Akamai network grows.

"The competition among e-businesses to attract and retain customers has fueled a growing demand for customized Web content," said George Kurian, vice president and general manager of content delivery services, Akamai. "Based on Akamai's core technology and real-time monitoring of Internet traffic, the EdgeScape service will enable content providers to increase user satisfaction and retention by delivering tailored content for a more intuitive online experience."

Loudcloud Intends to Resell EdgeScape Service
Expanding its relationship with Akamai, Loudcloud, Inc., a leading provider of infrastructure services for e-businesses, intends to become a reseller of the EdgeScape service.

"Akamai's EdgeScape service strengthens the comprehensive set of best-of-breed infrastructure services Loudcloud provides its customers," said Ben Horowitz, Chief Executive Officer of Loudcloud. "Our business is all about making our customers' Internet businesses highly scalable and reliable. Both Loudcloud and Akamai share a fundamental philosophy that innovative new services like EdgeScape are key to making this possible."
