CAMBRIDGE, MA - July 18, 2000 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, today announced its Akamai Edge Network Exchange program as an additional value-add for networks. The new program, available immediately, gives participating networks the ability to resell Akamai's global content delivery services to hosted and co-located network customers. Administered by Akamai, the new program offers revenue generation capabilities for all participating networks. Edge Network Exchange partners gain the benefit of offering today's market-leading content delivery services used by over 1,000 Web properties. With no large-scale capital expense required, Edge Network Exchange partners can offer their customers proven content delivery services that leverage their existing network infrastructure combined with Akamai's growing community of over one hundred globally distributed network partners.

"This program's core focus is on enabling network providers to offer their customers the benefits of proven content distribution capabilities while providing compelling revenue generation opportunities," said Earl Galleher, executive vice president, Akamai. "Akamai Edge Network Exchange leverages a rock-solid and demonstrated technology and requires no major investment in hardware or software. This creates the opportunity for fast returns with no costly build outs."

Akamai -- Adding more value to network partners
Available immediately to all Akamai Accelerated Network Partners, the Akamai Edge Network Exchange program allows partners to concentrate on bringing business-enhancing, retention-focused services to customers through reselling Akamai's revolutionary Internet content delivery services. All Edge Network Exchange partners also receive Akamai's 24x7 monitoring capabilities and support, as well as an industry-leading service level agreement (SLA).

"EarthStation Netaxs's hundreds of collocation and high-speed dedicated access customers are seeking global content acceleration. By joining Akamai's Edge Network Exchange we can leverage our network assets and realize additional revenue from our current customers," said Jeff Pasquale, CEO of EarthStation Netaxs. "Our business is about providing the best customer services, and Akamai's proven technology allows us to stay focused on the customer while improving our bottom line."

No costly content distribution network build-out necessary The Akamai Edge Network Exchange program saves networks time and money by minimizing additional capital expense associated with the build out of a comprehensive content distribution network infrastructure. The cost in time and financial resources in building out a content distribution network takes a network away from its core business. Edge Network Exchange enables networks to begin offering proven content delivery services with minimal lead-time.

"Through this new program, FASTNET can save money while improving service for our customers, and add another revenue stream to our model. The Akamai Edge Network Exchange program complements the value proposition of FASTNET's unique Customer Network FacilitiesTM to our customers. CNF's are high-speed, redundant and compact data centers located in key secondary markets used for broadband customer connections and colocation in over a dozen of FASTNET's regional networks. Through the program, our colocation customers will be able to take advantage of our prosperous and growing relationship with Akamai by working directly through their FASTNET customer representative to offer Akamai's industry-leading services as a significant value-add. This is a clear win for everyone," said David Van Allen, CEO at FASTNET.

Akamai acts as a single point administrator With Akamai Edge Network Exchange, participants have a single point administrator, yet can leverage Akamai's numerous network relationships. As a result, networks can offer their content provider customers content delivery services through all of Akamai's globally distributed nodes, leveraging Akamai's core competencies. As the single point administrator, Akamai:
  • offers a dynamically scalable solution, by administering infrastructure deployed at over one hundred networks;
  • oversees bandwidth management administration and billing administration; and,
  • maintains all reporting infrastructure for network partners and content providers, while assuring security across all partner networks for content delivered.
"Akamai provides us with a single point of contact for managing relationships with multiple networks," said Drew Falcione, Vice President of Application Solutions at Stargate. "Leveraging the world-class distribution network that Akamai provides enables us to offer the most scalable and reliable content distribution capabilities to our customers."

Keeping content providers in control of their content
The Akamai Edge Network Exchange program ensures that Web businesses keep total control over their content in terms of security, billing data, and load balancing, while never compromising freshness of content served. Edge Network Exchange partners can provide all content types as well as leverage today's leading companies that offer automatic AkamaizerSM functionality such as Alteon, CacheFlow, and F5 Networks.

"Comstar.net is mid-way into an aggressive national Internet data center build-out for dedicated server and co-location hosting and we see Akamai as fundamental to our promise of 100% guaranteed availability and ultra high-speed network performance," says Steve Edwards, EVP of Sales & Marketing at Comstar.net. "By joining the Akamai Edge Network Exchange program, we can deliver content for customers via Akamai's array of partner networks."
