Ziplink and Akamai Team to Deploy Akamai Servers Throughout Ziplink's North American Internet Backbone
LOWELL, MA, and CAMBRIDGE, MA -- August 7, 2000 -- ZipLink (NASDAQ: ZIPL), one of the fastest growing wholesale connectivity providers, and Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, today announced they have formed a strategic relationship to provide enhanced Web service to ZipLink's North American subscribers.
As an Akamai Accelerated Network partner, ZipLink will deploy Akamai servers within its Internet backbone network, accelerating performance and reliability for the delivery of rich Web content, streaming media, and applications to ZipLink customers. The Akamai deployment will also improve quality and reliability of large audio and video streaming events delivered by Akamai from within ZipLink's network.
"With the deployment of Akamai servers in our network, our subscribers will be able to access a wide range of popular web content with increased performance while experiencing faster downloads," said Christopher Jenkins, President of ZipLink. "ZipLink's vision is to provide the best experience possible to its partners and customers. Today's announcement with Akamai represents ZipLink's first step in its recently announced plan to increase the breadth and depth of its service offerings to its clients."
ZipLink currently supports over 500 ISPs in the U.S. and Canada and recorded over 1 million users on its dial-up network in July through its 800+ access numbers. The agreement with Akamai will allow ZipLink's ISP partners to continue to offer leading-edge service to customers.
"Our goal is to consistently expand our global network to deliver popular web content closer and more reliably to end users," said Avi Freedman, Akamai's vice president of network architecture. "As a recognized connectivity leader to the fast growing free Internet access providers, we are pleased that ZipLink has joined Akamai's Accelerated Network Program, enabling Akamai to extend the benefits of its content delivery services to ZipLink's growing subscriber base."
