EDS and Akamai Sign Broad Strategic Agreements to Provide Premier E-Business Services
As part of the strategic agreements, EDS will provide its Web hosting clients with Akamai's industry-leading Internet content delivery services, and Akamai will offer its content provider customers EDS' managed content storage services. The bundled service offering will eliminate server overloads and network bottlenecks by moving rich-media Internet content closer to users on secure, robust systems.
The combination of these services will allow content providers to store and replicate content in a distributed environment while reaping the benefits of Akamai's high performance and reliable content delivery, high-quality streaming media delivery, advanced global traffic management, and Web usage reporting. The EDS storage service is based on EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software.
"Akamai and EDS have correctly identified the powerful combination of content delivery services and storage technology. This partnership recognizes that the future of content delivery services will entail closer communication and integration between storage at origin sites and at the edge of the network," said Alex Benik, analyst at The Yankee Group.
"We recognize that many of our customers face an increasing need for managed, high-performance Internet-connected storage for much of the same rich-media content, especially audio and video files, that they rely on Akamai to deliver," said Paul Sagan, president and chief operating officer, Akamai. "So it was natural to marry EDS' worldwide presence, service excellence and data storage experience with Akamai's unique technology for replicating and distributing Internet content on a global basis, so that we can rapidly provide end-to-end solutions that meet the growing needs of our customers."
EDS will offer its Web hosting clients Akamai's FreeFlowSM content delivery, FreeFlowSM Streaming media delivery, and FirstPointSM global traffic management services. As Akamai's flagship offering, the FreeFlow service offers high-quality performance, reliability and scalability for delivering Internet content from an optimal server within Akamai's network to each user based on real-time Internet conditions. By moving content closer to end users and intelligently routing requests, the FreeFlow service eliminates problems caused by server overloads and network bottlenecks.
"The addition of Akamai's best-in-class content delivery technology continues to expand our robust service offerings to help our clients, and puts us in a stronger position going forward," said Douglas Frederick, president EDS Information Solutions. "At EDS, we view Web hosting as much more than merely hosting applications or Web sites. Web hosting in today's digital economy is about managing all aspects of the client's environment, to ensure that their Web sites and applications are healthy - from physical and logical security to Web performance monitoring and reporting. Offering Akamai's services helps us to complete the picture."
Joseph Tucci, EMC's president and chief operating officer, added, "The success of an Internet business hinges on its ability to properly manage, store and deliver ever-growing amounts of information, including rich media. The combination of services and technology from Akamai, EDS and EMC gives customers the confidence of knowing that their information is based on today's most scalable, available and flexible information infrastructure."
