Akamai's StorageFlow service integrates storage with content delivery to provide customers with end-to-end solution

CAMBRIDGE, MA - October 13, 2000 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media and applications, announced today the expansion of its global EdgeAdvantageSM platform to incorporate managed data storage. Akamai's StorageFlowSM service is a scalable, globally replicated, high-performance and fault-tolerant storage management service that will persistently store content delivered to end users via Akamai's content delivery services, including its FreeFlowSM, FreeFlowSM Streaming, and Digital Parcel Service offerings.

The quantity and variety of rich content, such as audio, video, photographs, software, games and other digital goods created for distribution over the Web, is growing rapidly. Akamai believes that integrated storage and content delivery will be key to the storage service market. Dataquest predicts the storage service market will grow to $8 billion by 2003.

Introduced last month, Akamai's StorageFlow service is already being used by many content provider customers from the media and entertainment, publishing, financial and software industries.

There are two components to Akamai's StorageFlow solution. First, Akamai ensures that customer content is stored on today's leading storage hardware, software and infrastructure technologies that include EMC's Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software managed by EDS, Network Appliance F700 Series File Servers, and Scale EightSM, Inc.'s MediaStore service.

Second, Akamai layers its replication, data management, availability and network performance technologies, that are all a part of its EdgeAdvantage platform, on top of the high-quality storage solutions, thus enabling a new generation of Internet storage services. Akamai's FirstPointSM global traffic management solution serves as the network performance and availability component of this layer.

"We have formed important partnerships with today's leaders in the storage space," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO, Akamai. "The combination of storage, Akamai 's storage management services, and content delivery from the edge of the Internet, creates a critical advantage that we believe will allow content providers to deliver richer and more relevant content to the end user. Ultimately, we want to make it easier for our customers to focus on their core business without worrying about Internet infrastructure associated with content delivery and storage."

"Akamai's best-of-breed storage and integrated service offering is essential as we continue to build our offering of digital music files and original broadband programming," said Marc Geiger, CEO and Chairman of ARTISTdirect, Inc. (www.artistdirect.com). "Akamai provides us with a scalable solution, and aids us in delivering content to our users in a reliable manner."

"With our comprehensive services for clients' video mail campaigns and video training applications, we required a highly scalable and reliable storage solution," said David McCutchen, CTO of ClipsCom, Inc. (www.clipscom.com), an application service provider offering video production, streaming and business services. "Akamai was the only company who offered us a compelling end-to-end storage and delivery solution, without having to interface with multiple service providers."

"Streamedia.NetTM (NASDAQ: SMIL) has utilized Akamai's massive distributed network to deliver high-quality, broadband media on behalf of our clients for some time," said James D. Rupp, president and CEO, Streamedia.Net, a streaming media services company. "Through the integration of a powerful storage service onto Akamai's platform, we can deliver our clients' interactive media content with even higher levels of performance and reliability."

The chief benefits of the StorageFlow service to Akamai's content provider customers are:
  • Single Point of Contact: seamless integration of persistent storage and content delivery with a single service level agreement and customer support
  • Performance: intelligent replication of content, use of the FirstPoint service to retrieve content and synchronization with edge devices result in best-in-class performance
  • Scalability: usage-based billing and capability to add tens of terabytes of storage at short notice
  • High Availability: replicated content on multiple networks at optimal locations ensures redundancy and maximum uptime
  • Content Management: sophisticated tools for managing, updating, editing and deleting content based on individual customer needs
  • Ease of storage management: outsourced solution encompassing equipment purchase, maintenance and upgrades as well as security and reliability
