  • Akamai's EdgeSuiteSM solution introduces intelligent content generation and comprehensive site delivery at the edge
  • Built upon Akamai's EdgeAdvantageSM platform, EdgeSuite provides E-businesses with the optimal solution for dynamic Web site availability, scalability and performance
CAMBRIDGE, MA - October 18, 2000 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, today unveiled EdgeSuite, a full-site content delivery solution for e-businesses. With the launch of EdgeSuite, Akamai is redefining the way content providers will create and deliver their Web sites. The new solution includes a suite of services that provides a full range of assembly, delivery and management of content. Leveraging Akamai's global network, EdgeSuite enables the generation and delivery of dynamic content from locations optimized for each end-user.

As next-generation Web sites become increasingly more complex, content providers are forced to devote more resources and focus on infrastructure -- at the expense of their core competencies. Akamai pioneered the content delivery market with its flagship FreeFlowSM and FreeFlowSM Streaming services, which enable the delivery of large objects like photos, ad banners and video from servers at the edges of the Internet. With the introduction of EdgeSuite, Akamai is again revolutionizing the market by offering a turn-key, scalable solution for content providers, allowing them to focus on their value propositions, business objectives and back-end database applications.

"Akamai remains focused on continuing to provide innovative solutions for our customers' growing needs," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO of Akamai. "Akamai's customers have benefited significantly from both the site uptime insurance and peak crowd protection that Akamai currently provides by offloading and serving their rich media content. Now, Akamai's EdgeSuite solution offers e-businesses the opportunity to reap those same benefits across entire Web sites. EdgeSuite takes Internet content delivery, an industry that Akamai helped pioneer, to the next level."

"The Motley Fool is very excited about Akamai's EdgeSuite service," said Kevin Book, director of Web Development at the Motley Fool. "The performance of the Akamai network combined with intelligent content assembly makes for a compelling offering."

"As a FreeFlow customer, we've seen first hand the power and the value of Akamai's network, technology and customer service, and we want to leverage this power across our entire site, not just the embedded content," said Mark Noblitt, vice president, Technology at Aptimus (NASDAQ: FSHP), an online direct marketing network. "EdgeSuite enables us to deliver sophisticated, dynamic content with the speed and reliability we've come to expect from Akamai, while greatly lowering infrastructure maintenance costs. We have been able to virtually eliminate Internet congestion or failures as a cause for site instability, or a poor consumer experience due to speed degradation. As a result of this work, FreeShop.com, one of our proprietary e-commerce Web sites, has reduced the download delivery time by 50 percent as measured by Keynote Systems."

Content Providers Maintain Control of Their Content
EdgeSuite offers delivery of all types of dynamic content-without interfering with a content provider's ability to set cookies, personalize content, and track and log users. The service provides the ability to deliver the broadest range of dynamic content, using both time-based and event-based content freshness controls. In addition, EdgeSuite gives the content provider comprehensive, intelligent management of their Web content through an Akamaization process that is simple and transparent to end users.

"At Vignette, we focus on helping today's leading e-businesses manage their publishing and production needs with market leading technology," said Bill Daniel, senior vice president for products at Vignette. "We have many joint customers already using Akamai's FreeFlow service and we believe that Akamai's EdgeSuite offers an exciting new functionality for web-based businesses."

Generation of Content from the Edge
EdgeSuite is the first solution to enable distributed application functionality at the edge of the Internet. Leveraging Akamai's thousands of edge servers, EdgeSuite dynamically constructs pages from component pieces that can be targeted to the end viewer. EdgeSuite will offload this CPU-intensive page assembly from the central origin server, allowing content providers to offer the richest, most responsive delivery of specialized content possible. For example, a news page might include a feature article targeted to a visitor's geographic location, or a commerce site might customize its storefront for returning users.

When EdgeSuite and best of breed managed hosting services are combined, content providers have a turn-key solution for a high-performance, reliable and scalable Web site. EdgeSuite also enables hosting providers to maximize "revenue per rack" by focusing on higher margin managed services.

"EDS is pleased with Akamai's continued evolution to meet the needs of the maturing Internet marketplace with its innovative EdgeSuite services, which enhances the areas of content delivery and management," said Gary Lerew, vice president, EDS Web Hosting. "EDS' web hosting clients will now have even greater control of their content within a stable and secure environment that results in a high performance, scalable hosting solution."

"The strategic relationship between Akamai and GlobalCenter creates a 'best of breed' solution that seamlessly integrates infrastructure, applications and complex Web hosting, with leading content delivery technology," said Laurie Priddy, co-Chief Operating Officer, GlobalCenter Inc. "We look forward to adding the benefits of EdgeSuite as we continue to build products that offer customers the best possible performance and reliability."

"Akamai has distinguished itself as a dynamic company that continually works to improve its content delivery services for e-businesses around the world," said Warren Hart, director, global offering management - Web hosting, IBM Global Services. "Coupled with IBM's industry leading Web hosting services, Akamai's new EdgeSuite solution will provide businesses with a broad range of options for improving their customer's Web experience."

"Continuing our partnership with Akamai, EdgeSuite will represent a valuable addition to NaviSite's comprehensive managed application hosting services," said Trish Gilligan, Chief Operating Officer of NaviSite, Inc. "NaviSite's Content Distribution Service powered by Akamai will be a key component to ensuring our customers of high-availability and optimal performance for their business-critical web applications."

"PSINet's enterprise and e-business customers require superior performance for their mission-critical Internet applications and content," said Jim Cragg, president of PSINet's United States operations. "Akamai's EdgeSuite represents an important step in our effort to ensure availability and delivery of content hosted in PSINet's Internet datacenters worldwide. Combining the strength of PSINet's services with Akamai's offerings creates a first-rate experience for our customers."

The Akamai EdgeSuite solution is currently in a controlled release and will be generally available in December 2000. Pricing will be announced at the time of general availability.
