Company sets milestone for growth of edge deployment in world's largest Internet content delivery network

Scottsdale, AZ - January 8, 2001 - Akamai Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading Content Delivery Service Provider (CDSP), today announced new recurring customer count and network deployment results closing out the year 2000. This afternoon at the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Internet, Software & Networking Conference, Akamai Chairman & CEO George H. Conrades announced that at the end of the year 2000:
  • Akamai had more than 1,325 recurring customers under contract, compared to 1,115 at the end of the third quarter 2000;
  • deployment of Akamai's global network expanded to include more than 460 networks, up from 335 networks in the third quarter 2000; and
  • the number of deployed Akamai servers was more than 8,000, compared to 6,060 in the third quarter 2000.

"In just over one year as a public company, Akamai has demonstrated strong growth in acquiring and servicing customers, as well as rapidly deploying our global network," Conrades said. "Web site owners across all markets have found significant savings on infrastructure costs by outsourcing their content delivery requirements to Akamai. This adoption of Akamai's services validates not only our business model and value proposition for Web businesses around the world, but also speaks to the incredible effort made by our dedicated employees."

At today's conference in Scottsdale, Mr. Conrades also commented on the broad nature of Akamai's customer base. "Akamai achieved great success first by servicing the Web's top portals and e-businesses, and over the past 12 months we have expanded our reach to include corporations from important vertical sectors, including finance, health care, automotive, and publishing." Conrades is also scheduled to make a presentation tomorrow at the Salomon Smith Barney Global Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference.
