CAMBRIDGE, MA and TOKYO, JAPAN - April 11, 2002 - Akamai Technologies Japan K.K. today announced that The Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest daily newspaper with a total daily circulation exceeding 10 million, will deploy the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service to ensure the reliability and availability of its Web site in the face of planned or unforeseen events.

"Visitors to our news site demand that timely content is delivered in a reliable, high-performance manner. In order to meet the demand for news ranging from domestic politics and economics to the international scene, we require a highly scalable and reliable network environment," said Tsuyoshi Ogura, deputy manager, Research & Development Department, Media Strategy Bureau, The Yomiuri Shimbun. "When the site is barraged by unexpected volumes of traffic, as in the aftermath of September 11, preserving the site's performance can be a problem. For this reason, The Yomiuri Shimbun has chosen to deploy Akamai EdgeSuite, which provides a stable infrastructure to ensure performance even in peak traffic conditions."

"In addition, when our origin servers are down due to planned maintenance or unforeseen events, our site remains available through Akamai's global platform," Ogura continued. "Akamai EdgeSuite ensures that we always serve the freshest content from an optimally-located server, reaching the end user in the most efficient way. With this ability to constantly serve users with critical news and information, we expect to increase the number of users who rely on our site on a daily basis."
