GSA schedule contract solidifies Akamai's comprehensive suite of secure edge computing services as recognized IT solutions for U.S. government accounts
Cambridge, MA - July 29, 2002 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of edge computing solutions delivering secure content and distributed applications across the Internet, intranets, and extranets, today announced it has been awarded a five-year schedule contract (#GS-35F-0626M) by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). As a result, Akamai's services are now included among the range of professional information technology offerings provided by GSA to federal agencies for strengthened information assurance of e-government programs.
GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by the U.S. Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. The GSA provides purchasing and requisition assistance on behalf of federal agencies for office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services. The inclusion of Akamai's offerings to the GSA schedule enables the GSA to bolster its list of IT products and services with new solutions for information assurance, DoS mitigation, global IP intelligence, and content tampering.
Under the contract award, the GSA will now make available to all federal agencies Akamai's complete portfolio of offerings for secure and reliable content and applications delivery. This includes the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service for maximum site availability and infrastructure hardening that limits the exposure of origin infrastructure from unauthorized intrusions; as well as EdgeScapeSM for global IP intelligence and customized content delivery to individual end users based on anonymous data.
"As federal agencies leverage digital technologies to transform their operations, demand for Akamai's secure e-government infrastructure services has dramatically increased," said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, Global Sales, Services, and Marketing, Akamai. "The GSA schedule award enables us to further expand our federal sales channel and simplify the government purchasing procedure for our services."
EdgeSuite is an integrated suite of services for secure, scalable, and reliable assembly and delivery of Web sites, business applications, and Web services via the Internet. These services are built on the Akamai Platform, the world's largest distributed edge computing platform.
Built on the Akamai Platform, EdgeScape enables government agencies to present location-specific information, tailoring content and programs around regional district differences, while adhering to privacy policies, without the use of cookies. With EdgeScape, government agencies can validate user location, helping ensure that information and services are delivered only to authorized geographies, thereby reducing the risk of misuse and fraud. In addition, EdgeScape can aid in the early detection and analysis of certain online cyber crimes and tracking of suspicious activities.
Akamai's services are currently deployed in government accounts that include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Government Printing Office, and the Voice of America. Akamai's federal operations are based in Reston, Virginia.
