NTT Com and Akamai to Launch Content Delivery Service in Japan
TOKYO, Japan and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — June 17, 2003 — NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) today announced that it has reached an agreement with Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) to collaborate in the field of content delivery networks (CDN) and launch in Japan, at the end of June, a broadband content delivery service, called Broadband CDN Powered by Akamai. This partnership will enable NTT Com to provide customers with the ability to extend their Web infrastructure through a scalable, distributed platform to optimize the speed, performance and reliability of delivering Web content and applications on demand.
Offered as a new CDN service of NTT Com, Broadband CDN Powered by Akamai will be seamlessly interconnected with Akamai's global network. NTT Com will install content-delivery servers at existing points of interconnection (POIs) between broadband access networks and NTT Com's IP backbone, which will enable content to be delivered from servers near the end-user and thereby reduce network congestion. The interconnection of Broadband CDN Powered by Akamai with Akamai's existing global network of more than 15,000 servers will enable Japanese enterprises to use servers near their end-users to deliver content with low latency worldwide.
Broadband CDN Powered by Akamai will support web-content solutions for e-commerce, including interactive applications such as online reservations, and will enable enterprises to reduce content-delivery equipment and network costs.
According to the agreement, Akamai will manage and operate the content delivery servers and provide marketing and technical support.
Japanese automaker Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Subaru), the first enterprise to trial the new service for a corporate website, is using Broadband CDN Powered by Akamai to deliver catalog content and video clips to promote its new Subaru Legacy touring wagon. Please see www.subaru.co.jp.
"We were looking for a scalable, reliable, competitive, and comprehensive solution to meet the widespread use of broadband in Japan, which is well ahead of most countries in this respect," said Dr. Masayuki Nomura, senior vice president and general manager of the Broadband IP Services Business Division at NTT Com. "Partnering with Akamai to develop our own content delivery network provides NTT Com with the best-of-breed technology, as well as a cost-effective solution, to provide world-class services for delivering content, streaming media and applications."
"Leveraging the Akamai platform, NTT Com is creating a strong competitive advantage through its ability to introduce content delivery capabilities as part of its overall offering," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO of Akamai. "NTT Com's strong presence and brand recognition in Japan will help to channel this new capability to today's leading e-businesses."
"Broadband CDN powered by Akamai has given us the scalability we need to support an extremely high-volume marketing campaign for our new Subaru Legacy touring wagon," said Mr. Takayuki Aoki of Fuji Heavy Industries. "We simply would not be able to handle the Web traffic with our exiting infrastructure. NTT Com's solution enables us to ensure the reliability of this web-based campaign when it matters most, while enabling us to avoid the costs of deploying additional hardware."
