Department Descriptions

Engineering Management

The Engineering Management group at Akamai is responsible for leadership, planning, and processes related to the mission-critical technologies used on our network of 65,000 servers located around the world. This group is also a vital part of cross-functional efforts, coordinating closely with other departments such as Product Management, Networks & Operations, Services & Support, and Finance.

Custom Engineering

The Custom Engineering group is responsible for designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining projects meant to fulfill customer requests that fall outside of Akamai's standard product offerings. Projects can range from development of small, custom applications to large, multi year deployments; these projects can also include working with customers from the public or private sector. Due to the breadth of Akamai products incorporated into custom projects, developers in this group work with all the various technologies developed throughout the Engineering organization

Cloud Platforms

The Cloud Platforms Engineering team has responsibility for the technologies that power our Site and Acceleration Products, including Dynamic Site Accelerator, IP and Web Application Accelerator, Edge Computing, Mobile Optimization, and Edge Tokenization for Payment Services. These systems improve the speed and reliability of web sites and applications running over various networking environments. By leveraging Akamai's global Internet deployment of 70,000+ servers, we can uniquely solve technology problems and exceed fundamental limitations of networking.

Advertising Decision Solutions

Akamai's Advertising Decision Solutions (ADS) division runs an innovative performance-based behavioral targeting ad network (acerno) that enables large online display advertisers to run extremely efficient marketing campaigns that exceed aggressive ROI goals with astounding scale and precision. The ADS team works with the largest Publishers, Advertisers, and Ad Networks on the internet today.

Industry Marketing

Industry Marketing owns the "where to go and what to say" at Akamai and is influential in guiding the salesforce and helping them succeed in their mission of market penetration. We do this through the creation of industry-specific packages, defining business value for prospective customers and then training sales to successfully sell to those prospects. The success of an Industry Marketing Director is measured in leads generated, deals closed, revenue booked and sales executives satisfied.

Network Systems Engineering

The Network Systems Engineering group develops the distributed systems technology that underpins our global network of 65,000 servers. Included within this group are several teams - Mapping, Network Management Systems, and System Communications. Mapping develops Akamai's load-balancing and DNS (name service) technologies, which are used daily to direct over a hundred million Internet users to ideally located EdgeServers for the requested content. Network Management Systems develops the fault management, reporting, configuration management and security systems that manage and monitor Akamai's globally distributed network. System Communications works on the infrastructural components that handle data flow around the network, as well as the data collection systems that process billions of records every day, providing valuable reporting to our customers.
