Engineering
The Engineering group at Akamai is responsible for designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining all the mission-critical technologies used on our network of over 35,000 servers located around the world. In this group, team members work on the software that enables fast & reliable delivery of content, acceleration of applications, and control of the entire network. With hundreds of software releases being deployed to the network each year, the pace is fast & dynamic. This group also does a significant amount of cross-functional work, coordinating closely with other departments such as Product Management, Networks & Operations, and Services & Support.
Custom Engineering
The Custom Engineering group is responsible for designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining projects meant to fulfill customer requests that fall outside of Akamai's standard product offerings. Projects can range from development of small, custom applications to large, multi year deployments; these projects can also include working with customers from the public or private sector. Due to the breadth of Akamai products incorporated into custom projects, developers in this group work with all the various technologies developed throughout the Engineering organization.
Application Acceleration Engineering
The Application Acceleration Engineering group is responsible for designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining some of the mission-critical technologies used on our network of over 35,000 servers located around the world to improve the speed and reliability of applications running over the Internet. Akamai can uniquely solve problems and exceed fundamental limitations of traditional networking. Within this group, different teams have reponsibility for designing and developing our core acceleration technology, the web interface where our customers directly interact with the products, and creating tools for our sales and support teams. These teams are all working toward the goal of building first-class application acceleration products for a fast-growing, highly profitable business within Akamai.
Network Control Engineering
The Network Control Engineering group develops the distributed systems technology that underpins our global network of over 35,000 servers. Included within this group are several teams - Mapping, Network Management Systems, System Communications, and Development Tools. Mapping develops Akamai's load-balancing and DNS (name service) technologies, which are used daily to direct over a hundred million Internet users to ideally located EdgeServers for the requested content. Network Management Systems develops the fault management, reporting, configuration management and security systems that manage and monitor Akamai's globally distributed network. System Communications works on the infrastructural components that handle data flow around the network, as well as the data collection systems that process billions of records every day, providing valuable reporting to our customers. Development Tools is charged with making software development, project planning, status reporting, and collaboration more efficient at Akamai.
EdgeControl Engineering
The EdgeControl Engineering group is responsible for EdgeControl, which is Akamai's Portal. EdgeControl provides our customers, channel partners, and internal staff visibility and control over Akamai's network of over 35,000 servers located around the world . Through the Portal our customers can get a global picture of how the Akamai system and the Internet are behaving, can fine-tune their web properties, access information about Internet services, and interact with Akamai's support team. With the use of the Portal, customers can truly use the Akamai network as an extension of their own built out infrastructure.
Analytics Engineering
The Analytics Engineering group builds technology that provides our customers valuable insights into their businesses and their end users. This group builds innovative performance analytics services that measure, analyze, and report on the availability and performance of web sites, streaming media, and web-based applications. This group also creates highly novel business analytics services that analyze, and report key metrics on how users access and experience streaming media and web content.
Media Engineering
The Media Engineering group is responsible for all the software used to deliver, store, and manage digital media content via our network of over 35,000 servers located around the world. This includes developing and maintaining our Live and On-Demand Streaming products that are an integral part of Akamai's globally distributed network of EdgeServers that deliver media content for major events. On the back end, developers work on Akamai's NetStorage system that stores massive amounts of customer content. This group also builds and maintains the StreamOS Portal, which enables customers to efficiently manage and monetize their digital media content.
Site Acceleration Engineering
The Site Acceleration Engineering group is responsible for Akamai's core caching and web server technology that runs on our network of over 35,000 servers located around the world. This software is used to deliver and accelerate entire web sites, web based applications, and download content such as software and media files from EdgeServers. The group also maintains and develops Akamai's EdgeComputing service, an enterprise class ‘cloud computing' solution. This is all built upon our customized operating system and kernel, also maintained by this group. The members of this group also work on some of our internally developed monitoring software that constantly provides server health and status information to our centralized monitoring infrastructure.
System Quality Assurance
The System Quality Assurance group is responsible for extensive testing across all the technologies developed in Engineering. This group is knowledgeable about all these technologies and focuses on real-world, end-to-end testing to ensure all of Akamai's systems integrate well. In addition, this group works on automated testing infrastructure and systematic test case tracking to increase efficiency within the quality assurance process.
