AdvancedMD Improves Average Transaction Round-Trip Time by Up to 30%, While Reducing Bandwidth Usage by More Than 70%

Founded in 1999, AdvancedMD® Software, Inc. – a privately held company with headquarters located in Salt Lake City, Utah – delivers a market-leading Softwareas-a-Service (SaaS) medical practice management and billing platform to more than 13,000 providers and 270 billing service providers. The company's Web-based platform processes more than one million claims per month for 85 medical specialties globally. In 2007, AdvancedMD was named to the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies, largely due to its record of signing up 1,200 practices in its first four years. Committed to delivering superior software to physician and medical billing offices, AdvancedMD has established itself as a trusted medical software provider, evidenced by a 98% customer retention rate.

With a focus on applying best practices wherever possible, AdvancedMD took a page from Steve Souders' book, High Performance Web Sites, which outlines fourteen steps to faster loading Web sites. The second of the fourteen recommendations is to leverage a content delivery network (CDN). "We're focused on being the best, and that means partnering with the best. In this case, it's Akamai," says Richey.

In combination with the major investments AdvancedMD made to its architecture and to optimizing its software code, the Akamai Web Application Accelerator (WAA) solution helped it dramatically improve performance. During initial testing, data collected by Akamai demonstrated it could speed the performance of a sample user click-path by up to 150% in the US and up to 350% globally. In production testing, AdvancedMD experiences an average 30% improvement in transaction round-trip time for its AJAX-intensive application. "With Akamai WAA, we've measurably improved application response times to give users performance comparable to a local system," explains Richey.

"We've delighted multiple accounts by putting them on the Akamai solution,"says Richey.

"With the Akamai WAA service, we can deliver the stellar performance our customers expect without expanding our infrastructure."
