Fon Uses Akamai Dynamic Site Accelerator to guarantee Smooth Data Transmission Worldwide and Ensure 100% Network Reliability

Fon Wireless Ltd. ("Fon") was founded in 2006 with the goal of creating a WiFi community of users willing to share part of their bandwidth to create a global network that enables free roaming.

As Fon saw steady growth of their user community and the global network of "Fon Spots," their Web servers were pushed to the limit. Concurrent requests for information from people around the globe led to network latency. "We did not want users of our services having a bad experience, as it would be negative for our business," states David González, System Manager at Fon.

With aggressive plans to further grow its global network – especially in Asia – Fon needed to find a solution.

With Akamai DSA, the company can handle millions of requests, from around the globe, including as far Asia. In fact, since implementing DSA, Fon was able to support a 400% increase in site traffic.

The reliability and reach of the Akamai DSA solution and Akamai network was proven when Fon answered the communication needs of Japan earthquake victims in March 2011. Fon offered free Internet access through its 500,000 Fon Spots in Japan, allowing the earthquake victims to communicate with their relatives and friends in a critical moment when most of the telecommunication networks didn’t work in Japan.
