Tektronix, Inc. is one of the world’s foremost producers of test, measurement and monitoring equipment for the communications, computer and semiconductor industries. Based in Beaverton, Oregon, Tektronix serves a truly global customer base, with customers in more than 20 countries and approximately 50 percent of the company’s sales coming from non-US customers. To serve its global customer base, Tektronix’s Internet Business Group (IBG) maintains a multi-lingual Web site that serves over 10,000 pages of content designed to reduce the total cost of customer service and build Tektronix’s global brand.
As usage of the site began to grow, some customers complained about unacceptable performance while accessing software updates and user manuals. The problem appeared to be especially acute in Asia. IBG quickly identified a solution that was by far the most logical choice: Akamai Web Application Accelerator. IBG deployed Web Application Accelerator in a pilot program aimed at demonstrating measurable improvements of download times in China. Akamai’s technology appeared highly capable of meeting Tektronix’s stated performance requirement for user manual and software downloads – without adding significant cost or infrastructure. End users quickly provided feedback that the performance significantly improved with Web Application Accelerator, and this was further validated by third-party reporting tools.
"Users should never be penalized because of where corporate headquarters are located," said Larry Bunyard, director, Internet Business Group, Tektronix, Inc. "We set a goal for ourselves to find a cost effective means to reduce the performance differential for all Asian users to within ten percent of our domestic users."
