Akamai Enables TicketOne to Support up to 1,000% Traffic Growth During Big Events, Maximizing Ticket Sales and Protecting Brand Image

TicketOne SpA is the leading company in Italy for ticketing services, e-commerce and marketing for music, shows, sport and cultural events. Its Web site – ticketone.it – is the destination to buy tickets for the biggest events in Italy and the main events abroad. In addition to selling via the Web, TicketOne also operates over 650 stores in Italy, several call centers and a promotion and groups office, all connected in real time.

On average, the TicketOne site processes 10-15 orders per minute, with peaks close to 1,000 orders per minute during major events a few days a year. Though TicketOne’s data center delivers bandwidth up to 100Mbit, the bandwidth needed to support traffic spikes can exceed 300 Mbit. As a result, the web site was often unavailable during big events for hours at a time.

TicketOne chose the Akamai Dynamic Site Delivery (DSD) service with unique caching management features to support their needs. Since deploying the Akamai solution, TicketOne has offloaded about 80% of requests for static content to the Akamai network, enabling it to handle a high volume of traffic and ensure 100% availability. Within a month of being live, the new solution successfully supported the first big test: ticket sales for the two Italian dates of the U2 360° Tour. The site handled the traffic with no problem, and has supported all traffic peaks since with ease, including ticket sales for Vasco Rossi, one of the most popular Italian artists. For his tour Vasco Live Kom 011, 60,000 tickets were sold in the first hour and a half, with a peak of 1,242 page views per second. The site supported almost 10,000 requests per second without any problems – nearly 20 times the normal rate.

"With Akamai Dynamic Site Delivery, we can scale to handle any amount of site traffic, enabling us to deliver a great user experience every day."
