As one of the world’s leading providers of online advertising solutions, Unicast has continually faced the challenge of scaling to handle a growing customer base and more bandwidth-intensive content without compromising delivery speed or reliability. The company realized early that even with a conservative growth forecast, they would consistently see a heavier bandwidth demand than their existing infrastructure could fulfill. Rather than take on the continual expense of additional infrastructure, they decided that outsourcing a significant portion of their ad serving traffic would be the most efficient and cost-effective way to manage growth.
Unicast moved delivery of a significant portion of their services to Akamai’s EdgePlatform, a distributed network of more than 18,000 servers worldwide. Specifically, Unicast caches multimedia images including video, Flash™, Java and HTML with EdgeSuite, Akamai’s distributed content delivery service, and processes ad delivery results with Akamai’s EdgeComputing distributed application delivery service. The solutions give Unicast the ability to deliver content and J2EE Web applications that scale on demand and perform faster and more reliably worldwide—while reducing the demands on their own IT infrastructure and simplifying support.
"When we investigated outsourcing our infrastructure, we started with a pool of providers that were the most elite and top performing—and found Akamai to be the best of the best."
—Allie Savarino, Senior Vice President, Unicast
