XMOS Improves Global Performance by 249% on Average and Supports Triple the Site Traffic without Adding Data Centers

XMOS Ltd. (XMOS) develops and markets event-driven multi-core processor chips that make it easy to build electronic products entirely in software. The company's Web site plays a vital role in its business, enabling both current and potential customers worldwide to learn more about the company, obtain support, and buy products via its online store 24/7. The XMOS multimedia-rich site also plays a critical role delivering the latest releases of its desktop tools and offering online tutorials to users. The site sees an average of 100,000 page views per month, the majority of which are accessed by prospects and customers in international locations.

XMOS considered building out data centers in global locations, but quickly dismissed this option. "The costs to build out and maintain the infrastructure would have been prohibitive. Plus, we still wouldn’t have been able to route around Internet bottlenecks," says Jason Mayes, Senior Web Development Engineer at XMOS. Intent on finding a proven, ready-made solution, the company evaluated a number of content delivery networks.

With Akamai Web Application Accelerator (WAA) serving all XMOS content via an optimal route, the end-user experience is dramatically enhanced. Delivery times across the company's major global geographies have improved by an average of 249%. In most cases, pages display within two or three seconds. This aligns with the company's marketing objectives. According to Mayes, "Through marketing campaigns and promotions, we've increased unique site visitors by over 200%. Having a responsive site helps keep them engaged, resulting in more time spent on our site." Furthermore, XMOS has reduced hits on its origin server significantly, resulting in an 80% origin offload. "Offloading traffic to Akamai enables us to maintain a lean infrastructure," continues Mayes.

"By using Akamai WAA, we satisfy expectations for a fast, engaging online experience, no matter where end users are located."
