Akamai Stream Analyzer

Elevate and Manage the Quality of Experience for your Streaming Media.

Media Analysts predict that the Streaming media market is on course to triple its revenues to over $12 Billion by 2014. The explosive consumer adoption of broadband has created newer opportunities for satisfying the ever-increasing consumer appetite for rich online content. Both traditional and new content producers are beginning to take note of this burgeoning online audience. However, to capitalize on these trends, companies must fully understand the impact of sub-optimal streaming performance and the negative impact of poor online media experience on advertising revenues and brand perception.

Delivering a consistently great streaming video experience online is a mammoth task considering that broadband penetration and access to IT infrastructure vary vastly from region to region. This is compounded by the congested internet and other inherent issues.

These variable conditions demand pro-active monitoring of your stream performance from all customer locations, ensuring a consistently high quality user experience across your audience base.

Akamai Stream Analyzer

Akamai Stream Analyzer is a managed service that allows you to closely monitor the performance of your Flash and Windows media streaming assets. Using agents from Internet backbone locations globally, the Stream Analyzer is designed and optimized to provide real-time reporting on key metrics such as:

Availability: The ability to successfully view a stream. The availability metric captures connection failures to the server, dropped connections during stream play and, startup and re buffer times that exceed acceptable limits.

Startup Time: The time taken for the stream to start playing after the end-user hits the Play button. This metric includes DNS lookup time, connect time and initial buffer time.

Effective Bitrate: The number of bits rendered on the player is the actual stream quality experienced by the end user. It quantifies the quality of end user experience, unlike metrics like packet loss and jitter that are only indicative of stream quality.

Rebuffer Ratio: The ratio of time spent in re buffering and the total play time of the stream. The number of re buffer events, and the amount of time spent re buffering, add significantly to user dissatisfaction.

The Key features of this solution include the following:

Faster Diagnostics
Asset owners can diagnose problems faster with:
  • Stream play time breakdown into its different components
  • Proactive alerts based on customizable thresholds
  • Instant snapshot of stream performance in different locations
  • Error buckets by location, type and server IP
Flexible Test Configuration
  • Flash or Windows media streams and delivery modes such as RTMP, RTSP, or HTTP can be monitored.
  • Akamai delivered authenticated streams can be tested using agents dispersed in more than 50 locations globally.
Actionable Reporting
  • Performance metrics based on location and/or time that enable you to identify and isolate specific elements of user dissatisfaction.
  • Measured data that can be stored for 90 days for analysis.
  • Reports can be periodically e-mailed to relevant stakeholders.
How Akamai Stream Analyzer Works:

How it works Akamai Stream Analyzer allows you to effectively monitor your On-demand and Live Streaming assets (Windows media and Flash media). It also supports Metafiles and Progressive downloads for Windows media streams.

First, the Media Asset owners provision tests on the Akamai Edge Control portal by specifying the desired parameters (choosing frequency and test locations).

The test configuration is then pushed to all the relevant nodes in the Stream Analyzer agent network deployed globally to start running measurement tests. Stream Analyzer measurements use an Akamai patented technology to ensure that data accurately reflects streaming performance.

Data collected from these tests is sent to the Analytics back end, where test data from all the agents is aggregated and the key metrics (e.g availability, re buffer ratio) are computed.

The resulting metrics and diagnostic information is displayed on the portal and/or e-mailed to the respective stakeholders.
