The Akamai Net Usage Index for Digital Music is the world’s first and only daily Web traffic benchmark that tracks where and when digital music is being consumed on a global basis. Akamai, as the delivery platform for many of the leading global digital music companies, has a unique view into the daily Web traffic of music streaming and music download websites. Akamai has been in business for eight years, and serves content on behalf of the majority of the world's leading digital media sites.

Following is an explanation of how we measure visitors / minute:

KEY

V/M = measures current millions of visitors per minute* to aggregate digital music sites (this number reflects the current rate in each geographic region)

% = measures the percent above or below the average of visitors per minute for that time of day, and day of week, within each geographic region, based on an 8-week average (with data points taken at 5 minute intervals)

* for each minute, Akamai is measuring the number of visitors that visited a site during that minute

How is the data collected?
Without releasing any proprietary data about its individual music customers, Akamai is aggregating data on behalf of its global digital music companies. Collectively, this data will determine the consumption level of digital music in real-time, as well as capture peak page views delivered across the Akamai Platform in any 24-hour period. By plotting these peaks for each day, the Akamai Net Usage Index for Digital Music will be the first live online barometer to measure traffic levels by geography.
