Akamai Powers Portable Distribution of Digital Audio and Video Assets for Leading Customers
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, announced today that many of its customers, including National Public Radio, Premiere Radio, and France Televisions Interactive are executing on innovative portable digital media strategies with the Akamai Media Delivery solution.
Akamai's distributed network is leveraged daily by leading global companies to deliver digital content across a variety of platforms and devices. Major mobile carriers are delivering music and video content directly to mobile handsets, and global media and entertainment companies are extending their brand, engaging with audiences and deriving new revenue streams through portable media distribution strategies such as podcasts and video-on-demand. In response to these trends, Akamai has enhanced its applications and media delivery platform to support the requirements of guaranteed massive availability, content control, reporting and asset monetization. Akamai also recently developed an easy-to-use guide for creating and delivering video and audio podcasts. Additionally, Akamai's support for Windows® Media DRM 10 allows content owners to plan for device portability with their premium content.
"We are seeing significant growth in the number of Akamai customers targeting digital content for portable devices, as well as heightened levels of device traffic and downloads demonstrating increased consumer interest," said Robert Hughes, executive vice president of global sales, services and marketing at Akamai. "Akamai makes it easier for our customers to embrace this growing trend and further monetize their assets, while providing the business analytics to measure user consumption."
Podcasting — Video Casting
"The use of podcasts for technology and business communications is rising rapidly. Through the power of Internet search, blogs, email newsletters, RSS, and viral online sharing, companies are increasingly enjoying concentrated yet low-cost distribution of powerful rich content to highly interested and influential user communities," said Dana Gardner, principal analyst, Interarbor Solutions. "Podcasting allows organizations to attract and communicate directly with their core target audiences — on the listeners' terms — and at their mobile convenience."
Podcasting lets content owners offer audio or video content to be heard or viewed on a device, on a time-shifted basis. While often free, monetization of podcasts is an increasing trend, and advertising sponsored podcasts are further evidence. Digital audio and video files can be very large and popular podcasts add significant capacity and storage demands to infrastructure that can cripple a web server or network. The Akamai Media Delivery solution makes it easy for companies to handle large spikes in demand caused by popular audio or video podcast downloads. In addition, detailed reporting modules offer download intelligence such as download completion rates and geographic data, as well as audience intelligence metrics such as unique visitors and top IPs, providing a deeper insight into podcasting distribution and performance.
The Akamai Media Delivery solution enables leading media companies such as National Public Radio, Premiere Radio, and Comedy Central to deliver popular podcasts.
Secure Digital Rights Management Across Devices
As video-enabled portable devices and handsets proliferate, content owners must plan for portable distribution and monetization of premium content. Akamai License Delivery for Windows® Media DRM 10 supports portable device distribution with the widest range of purchase and rental options for digital media to ensure the security of premium content as it flows from device to device. In addition to the PC, content owners can target content for playback on any Windows Media enabled device including portable audio and video players, set-top boxes, and mobile devices with audio and video capabilities.
"Through Akamai's DRM technology we were able to post more content online, created by independent authors and producers, and protect their rights in a completely secure way," said Philippe Daguerre, technical manager of France Televisions Interactive. "In addition to license delivery, France Televisions uses Akamai's geo-targeting solution to distribute content only to rights authorized regions."
