Akamai Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and applications online, today announced that it has helped Boots to optimize its online business by supporting the company's website through its Dynamic Site Accelerator solution. Boots, the UK's leading high street pharmacy, has been working with Xansa, a UK-based outsourcing and technology company, to support its online presence since 2003. The decision to leverage Akamai was taken by Xansa and Boots to help improve the reliability and performance of the Boots website.

Prior to using the globally-distributed Akamai EdgePlatform, Boots had relied upon infrastructure support from a centralized content delivery network (CDN) for its website and online business. However, as Boots planned to expand its business online, it became apparent that a centralized infrastructure model would be difficult to scale to support this activity.

"We knew that the existing infrastructure was nearing its limits," said Iain Brunning, Client Manager at Xansa. "To help support Boots' planned expansion of its online business, a new solution was needed from a cost, reliability and performance perspective."

Xansa recommended Akamai's Dynamic Site Accelerator solution to Boots. "We were impressed with Akamai's existing work helping leading UK retailers such as Comet and Marks & Spencer," said Brunning. "In addition, the Akamai solution was very scalable and could be delivered on demand, avoiding many of the costs and implications of an infrastructure build or lease solution."

Akamai's Dynamic Site Accelerator solution will help support Boots.com in much more than just availability and performance. Through features such as dynamic mapping, route optimization, dynamic content assembly and advanced cache optimization, Akamai will enable customers to experience a sophisticated online buying experience with no effect on the speed or performance of Boots.com.

"A successful pilot trial of the Akamai solution was conducted during the 2006 Christmas peak trading, and we went fully live in February of 2007. We have been extremely pleased with the results," concluded Brunning. "We are confident that our customer, Boots, will benefit greatly from this switch to the Akamai platform."

Russell Harte, Business Systems Manager at Boots, said: "It is an important part of Boots' business planning to increase the proportion of our business coming from online customers. We have seen real performance improvements to our website since we started to use Akamai's services. As we move through 2007, we anticipate seeing an increase in the contribution that our online business will make to our overall growth."

Malcolm Rowe, Regional Manager Northern Europe at Akamai, said, "Boots is one of Europe's leading retail brands and it recognizes the need to diversify its business model to take advantage of the upsurge in online consumer spending. Our Dynamic Site Accelerator solution is designed to help retailers, and other businesses that rely heavily on e-commerce, get the most out of the latest Web technologies and provide their customers with a compelling and enjoyable online shopping experience. We look forward to working with Boots and Xansa as its online business grows and develops."

Akamai's Dynamic Site Accelerator service enables a high-performing user experience that encourages consumers to browse and shop by supporting richer content and applications on websites that are assembled dynamically. While highly-effective, richer content can slow page download time and lead to site abandonment by the customer, Dynamic Site Accelerator gives performance that is up to five times faster than on original Web infrastructure. As it is supported by the global Akamai EdgePlatform, it also avoids the costly hardware build-out to support the increased load brought on by richer content.
