Jim Benson serves as Executive Advisor to Akamai CEO and Co-Founder Tom Leighton, after having previously served as Akamai’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from 2012 through February 2019.
In his previous role, he oversaw all global finance functions for Akamai worldwide, where he was dually focused on driving growth and operational excellence. He was responsible for the company’s financial and capital management strategies, budgeting and planning, accounting, tax, treasury, business operations, internal audit/risk management, order management, investor relations, and strategic sourcing activities. At Akamai, he has been instrumental in navigating the company’s growth, revenue diversification and business operations expansion/scaling into one of the world’s largest and most profitable cloud services and cyber security leaders with revenues exceeding $2.7 billion.
He joined Akamai in September 2009 as Senior Vice President of Finance, after holding a broad range of financial leadership roles at Hewlett Packard Company (HP). He has more than 30 years of experience building, scaling and leading finance teams in global information technology companies with significant operating scale and complexity. He spent 20 years at HP in a variety of senior finance leadership roles, including VP, Finance/Operations & CFO for HP’s Americas Technology Solutions Group, a $14 billion P&L entity encompassing the enterprise server, storage, software and services businesses. Prior to assuming this role in May 2004, he was VP, Finance and CFO for HP's Worldwide Customer Support Division.
Prior to joining HP in May 2002, he served as the Controller for the Global Services business at Compaq Computer Corporation. Before that, he held several financial leadership positions at Compaq, including Financial Planning and Analysis Director of the Customer Services business segment. Previously, he spent more than 10 years with Digital Equipment Corporation, in a variety of domestic and international roles, specializing in driving and managing balanced business performance across the enterprise.
He earned his M.B.A. from Clark University, a B.S. in Finance from Bentley College, and is a graduate of Digital Equipment's Financial Development Program.
