Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, today announced that it has been named a recipient of IBM's PartnerWorld Beacon Award for its innovative business solutions that support IBM's On Demand strategy. The Beacon Award gives recognition to Akamai as one of IBM's top business partners for bringing innovation to the marketplace. The winners were announced last week by IBM and will be honored during the IBM PartnerWorld 2005 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 27th-March 2nd.
The IBM PartnerWorld Beacon Awards recognize business partners who are combining technology expertise with business insight to help their clients solve important business issues that help them become more competitive. Nearly 600 nominations were reviewed by a panel of leading industry journalists, analysts, and IBM executives, who selected winners in 31 award categories. The judges selected Akamai as the winner of "Independent Software Vendors - Teaming to Win in the Mid-Market with IBM Global Services (IGS)" because of the way Akamai teamed with two areas of IGS to create a customer solution that supports IBM's On Demand strategy for the small and medium business marketplace.
Akamai's award nomination was supported by Apple Vacations (www.applevacations.com), one of the largest tour operators in the world, which is benefiting from a joint Akamai-IBM on demand solution for a better web presence and an enhanced online reservation service. The Akamai EdgeComputing® powered by WebSphere® service is part of an overall e-commerce architecture that was created by Akamai and IBM Business Consulting Services to provide on demand scalability and improved Web application response times.
According to George D. Chizmar, vice president of IT, Apple Vacations, "We were very impressed by the close cooperation between the Akamai and IBM teams. As our online business continues to grow, the Akamai team is helping us chart a technology strategy for the future, and we are considering various new initiatives with Akamai to support additional business functions."
"With On Demand Business as the focal point for everything we do, the IBM PartnerWorld Beacon Awards recognize our marquee Business Partners that are having a great impact on IBM's On Demand Business strategy," said Geoff Vickrey, partner, IBM Business Consulting Services. "Akamai, who has been a strategic partner to IBM since 2000, is critical to IBM's success and we are proud to acknowledge them as a Beacon Award winner."
"Our unique partnership model with the IBM Business Consulting and e-Business Hosting organizations provides a winning combination of technology and professional services that creates a total on demand e-business solution for our customers," said Peter Spiliakos, vice president, Global Channels, Akamai.
