Australia's Online Publishing Giant, News Interactive, Leverages Akamai to Scale for Growing Readership

Sydney, AU |

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, today announced that News Interactive, one of Australia's largest online publishers, has experienced steady return on investment directly related to the implementation of Akamai solutions more than a year ago.

News Interactive, which operates many of Australia's leading news and information websites such as NEWS.com.au, australianIT.com.au, FOXSPORTS.com.au, and theaustralian.com.au, has seen website availability increase to 99.9 percent, and load on its servers reduced by close to 90 percent since implementing the Akamai EdgeSuite and Akamai Streaming solutions. With Akamai, News Interactive has been able to handle with ease sudden major spikes in online traffic due to large news events such as the Corby verdict, London bombings, Bali bombings, and the election.

"Extending our infrastructure to Akamai has allowed us to dramatically improve site performance, reduce infrastructure costs, and increase our competitive advantage," said Alistair Carwardine, director of Online Services, News Interactive. "Akamai was able to quickly implement its Streaming solution to support a large, strategic business project for News Interactive. Since implementation, all of News Interactive sites have experienced increased performance."

During the recent Corby trial, News Interactive traffic throughput increased four times, with video streaming peaking at more than ten times its average.

Carwardine adds, "It is for these reasons that Akamai continues to be a major component of our strategy for delivering high performance on a global scale while minimizing Web infrastructure burdens and expenses."

"We're extremely pleased to have established a strategic relationship with News Interactive, and to support their worldwide content delivery needs," said Robert Hughes, executive vice president of Global Sales and Services at Akamai. "Millions of people visit News Interactive sites each month for news and information gathering, as well as real estate, auto and other purchasing decisions."

In August of this year, Akamai announced its Net Usage Index for News (www.akamai.com/netusageindex), the world's first and only daily Web traffic report with information on aggregate total visitors per minute to news portal sites and from where in the world news is being consumed. Akamai serves as the Web content delivery platform for more than 100 global news sites and is unique in its ability to measure aggregate online news consumption in real-time. The Akamai Net Usage Index is updated every five minutes, and posts data for the analysis of trends and shifts in news portal Web traffic during major news events.
