Rediff.com Launches India's First Online Music Store by Partnering with Akamai
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, announced today that Rediff.com (NASDAQ: REDF), one of the premier worldwide online providers of news, information, communication, entertainment and shopping services in India, chose Akamai Media Delivery to enable the secure download of music on its newly launched music portal. Rediff's e-Commerce Payment Gateway seamlessly integrated with Akamai's secure delivery and download service, making Rediff.com India's first online music retailer.
The first singer to bring music online to Indian fans was Sanjay Maroo, an accomplished Indian composer and singer. Maroo launched an online music download site leveraging Rediff.com as the launch portal to enable millions of his fans worldwide to download songs with digital quality.
"The demand for media of all types—music, movies, games and more—is enormous and growing rapidly. However, there are many challenges to successfully monetizing media assets online," said Stuart Spiteri, Director, Asia Pacific, Akamai Technologies. "This requires that media be supported in all popular formats compatible with multiple end-user devices and platforms. Businesses also need to be able to protect and track the use of their media assets to ensure they are being used properly and verify that only authorized consumers are accessing them."
"Akamai Media Delivery has been instrumental in revolutionizing the content delivery arena and enabling efficient monetization of media content," says Venki Nishtala, CTO, Rediff.com. "Akamai has been providing increased scalability, availability and performance for our Web site for close to five years, and they were a natural choice for powering our online music initiative."
"Rediff is one of the most trusted content providers in India and users' trust is very important in any dealing," said Sanjay Maroo. "Secure sites exist all over, but the image and the trust comes only with time and experience. When this partnership with Rediff came along with Akamai providing the download platform, I knew the project would run smoothly, given Akamai's experience in the field."
