Friendster Nearly Triples Performance and Page Views Served by Implementing Akamai Solution

Cambridge, MA |

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, today announced that Friendster, a leading online community site with more than 27.5 million users, has seen significant business gains as a result of implementing Akamai's global content delivery and high-availability managed storage services. Improved site performance, specifically faster page download times, translated into immediate business value for Friendster, measured by increased site usage and revenue.

Through its reseller relationship with Internap Network Services, a leading provider of performance-based IP solutions, Akamai provides Friendster a best-of-breed solution for performance, availability and scalability.

Since implementing Akamai's solution in March, Friendster, which ranks as one of the top 100 sites on the Internet*, has offloaded a significant percentage of its total traffic from origin servers, avoiding the need to buy additional costly infrastructure. With Akamai handling global content delivery using Akamai's proprietary EdgePlatform™, Friendster has increased site usage and enabled more advertising to be consumed on the site. The result is an increase in revenue due to improved performance. Friendster will also use Akamai's streaming solution to offer users the ability to add streaming audio and video to their online profiles.

"Increased page views and decreased page download times are the holy grail for us. Leveraging the market leader in content delivery allows us to ensure that as demand for our site grows, we can handle it and continue to expand our services," said Tim Denike, Friendster's Operations Lead. "We had a seamless integration onto the Akamai platform — literally plug and play within minutes — and immediately saw a 100 percent improvement in the overall page loading times. More importantly, use of Akamai's services was the primary factor in our ability to steadily increase overall daily page views in March to near triple that of the previous months. These page views directly correlate to revenue for us, making Akamai a very strategic solution."

Individual end users are increasingly becoming content creators and publishers on the Internet. The online companies and communities supporting these initiatives face the increasingly difficult task of planning, provisioning, maintaining, securing, and scaling their systems to meet end user demands. This problem is compounded by the increased utilization and sharing of more media-rich content such as streaming video, downloads, and podcasts, as well as the expansion of communication functionality like blogging. Akamai's turnkey solutions allow sites, such as social networking sites, to cost-effectively focus on core functionality and applications, and dramatically decrease time-to-market. "There is a fundamental shift in the way people are networking and using the Internet for personal interactions. With this fast-growing trend comes an incredible amount of interest in, and usage of, social networking sites," said Robert Hughes, Akamai Executive Vice President, Global Sales, Services and Marketing. "Akamai's global platform is an incredibly effective tool for companies like Friendster to ensure optimal site availability and performance, ultimately maximizing revenue generation." Friendster's site offers several ways for people to interact and express themselves online:

  • Communicating with friends via messaging, chat and blogs
  • Tracking information about friends
  • Customizable profiles, including photo slideshows
  • Networked classifieds
  • Photo comments and ratings
  • Reviews
  • File sharing
