Breault Research Realizes Significant Performance Improvements through Akamai Download and Site Acceleration Solutions
- Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced Breault Research Organization (BRO), a provider of optical engineering software and services, has seen significant performance improvements to the company's software downloads and demonstration movie accessibility since implementing Akamai's Electronic Software Download and Dynamic Site Accelerator solutions.
"With Akamai's solutions now in place, worldwide accessibility to our on-demand content is hugely improved," said Michael Stevenson, BRO's director of marketing. "Given the immediate results, we are confident that Akamai's solution set benefits small businesses selling products internationally just as it does enterprise corporations with much larger profiles. Each month, Akamai's Electronic Software Download solution enables us to successfully deliver thousands of extra on-demand software demonstrations to prospects in foreign territories, and our implementation of Akamai's Dynamic Site Accelerator solution ensures that all other site content loads rapidly, regardless of visitors' locations."
With BRO's previous streaming solution, the company typically transferred 65 GB of content each quarter, and delivery success rates were below 20 percent in some key foreign territories—17 percent in India, for example. The company is now seeing delivery success rates over 90 percent in India, and similar performance improvements in the rest of its top 20 global regions. With the ability to deliver and cache files across Akamai's globally-distributed network, BRO transferred more than 1 terabyte of content during Q1 2010 alone—more than 15 times the volume of content delivered by the company in preceding quarters.
"Today, Akamai's solutions enable us to flawlessly serve the vast majority of online demonstration-movie and software-download requests we receive. And the online delivery approach is more cost-effective, greener and less labor intensive than shipping packaged discs to prospects in over 30 countries," said Stevenson.
BRO has more than 100 software demonstration movies and full-motion video case studies being served by Akamai. Since implementation, viewers are experiencing faster movie download times and smoother playback. This is especially visible internationally, where the majority of visitors were previously unable to view BRO's product demonstration movies due to the distance between them and the files being served. Previously, visitors in many foreign countries would attempt to view a product demonstration and leave when the content would not play reliably. A relatively small subset of visitors would then request demonstration CDs and DVDs that the company has made available, but the majority of these opportunities to put content in front of qualified prospects were simply lost without a reliable online viewing system in place.
"The immediate business impact BRO has experienced is another testament to the applicability of Akamai's enterprise solutions to support the needs of small businesses like BRO," said Hal Kalish, Director of High Tech Industry Marketing at Akamai. "Akamai's ability to quickly improve the availability, performance and user experience across BRO's sites and applications - on a global scale - is extremely exciting and Akamai looks forward to continuing this positive, successful relationship with BRO."
Akamai Electronic Software Delivery addresses the quality of experience, scale, workflow and analytics requirements of software vendors. The solution provides a predictable, reliable platform to deliver both small and large software downloads effectively to customers and provide the visibility to monitor the entire download process through server and client side reporting. Akamai Dynamic Site Accelerator gives you performance that is up to five times faster than your original Web infrastructure and handles the specific requirements of dynamically generated content—without a costly hardware buildout.
