Scopellite to the Akamai Board of Directors effective January 1, 2014. Mr. Scopellite recently retired from Goldman Sachs after a distinguished 28-year career having served as global head of the firm's 8,000-person Technology Division and as chief information officer.
During his tenure at Goldman Sachs, Mr. Scopellite played a key role in the development of the firm's global funding platform and early expansion into electronic trading. His leadership efforts were instrumental in strengthening the firm's business resiliency and in helping Goldman Sachs adapt to the rapidly changing regulatory environment. His work has earned him recognition on Institutional Investor's recent Tech 50 list.
"We are honored to welcome Steve to our Board of Directors and look forward to benefiting from his significant financial technology expertise," said Dr. Tom Leighton, CEO of Akamai. "Steve's work at Goldman Sachs has made him a leader in the industry, recognized for his innovation and ability to identify important technology trends, as well as to mentor future leaders. We believe his financial services and technology insight, as well as his strong management experience, will be invaluable to Akamai going forward."
Mr. Scopellite commented, "I'm thrilled to be joining the board of such an important and innovative company – one that enables other businesses to leverage the power of the Internet. Akamai has helped pioneer the market for the secure and fast delivery of mission-critical data. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to Akamai's continued momentum."
Mr. Scopellite joined Goldman Sachs in 1986 as a software engineer in the firm's financing functions. He moved to London in 1993 to lead technology in support of the firm's expansion into new markets across Europe and Asia, and returned to New York in 1996 to take responsibility for the build-out of its early electronic trading platform. He later assumed additional responsibility for Equities Technology before becoming co-chief operating officer of the Technology Division in 2004. He was named co-chief information officer of the firm in 2007 and became chief information officer in 2011.
Mr. Scopellite is a member of the National Board of Directors for Computers for Youth and a special advisor to the National Society of Black Engineers.
