Akamai Announces Expanded Support for the Adobe Flash Platform

- Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced plans to integrate support for Adobe® HTTP Dynamic Streaming and Adobe Flash® Access™ 2.0 into the Akamai HD Network. The Akamai HD Network will simplify the adoption of HTTP Dynamic Streaming for customers utlilizing Flash technology by leveraging unique “in the network“ packaging and encryption. With the integration of Adobe's technology and the Akamai HD Network, the two companies will allow customers to enable high-quality, secure media experiences based on the Adobe Flash Platform.

Today's announcement is an evolution of a long standing alliance between the two companies, and showcases Akamai's continued commitment to working with the Adobe Flash technology. This has been demonstrated over the years through Akamai's support for market-leading Adobe products including Adobe Flash Media Server, and more recently, the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF), of which Akamai was a founding partner. Akamai and Adobe have worked together over the last two years to develop a common industry approach to simplified player development including the Open Video Player and OSMF. Akamai is a key distribution channel for video delivered via the Flash Player, providing a strong technology foundation for the industry to grow and enabling industry milestones, such as President Barack Obama's inauguration where the Akamai network peaked at more than 1Tbps, as well as support for major live online sporting events around the globe.

Akamai's HD for the Adobe Flash Platform is uniquely designed to simplify the adoption of HTTP Dynamic Streaming for existing customers utilizing Flash technology. In particular, the Akamai HD for the Adobe Flash Platform will allow a customer to leverage its existing workflow to provide content to the Akamai HD Network – much like it does today. The Akamai HD Network, through unique Edge-based packaging technology, will then automatically convert the content to be delivered via HTTP Dynamic Streaming into the Adobe Flash run time, allowing customers to adopt the new HTTP Dynamic Streaming capabilities with minimal change or investment in how they manage their content. In addition, Akamai plans to integrate Adobe Flash Access 2.0 - a studio-approved content protection solution accepted by the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) - into the Akamai HD for the Adobe Flash Platform 2.0. This solution is designed to offer customers an added security option, in addition to the layers of Akamai security technology of token authorization, player verification, geo-blocking and secure media transport via SSL, and allows them to swiftly and easily package and secure their existing video content – whether in MP4, FLV or F4V - for delivery over the Akamai HD Network.

Akamai's HD Network was developed with the goal of delivering the highest quality experience at broadcast audience scale 1 across the industry's most popular devices, platforms and runtimes. Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming is a new Adobe-defined, standards-based delivery method for enabling on-demand and live adaptive bitrate video streaming over HTTP connections. Adobe Flash Access 2.0 is a robust content protection solution for both live and video on demand content. Akamai's support for this new Adobe technology will be made available as part of Akamai HD Network for the Adobe Flash Platform. Akamai plans to trial both technologies with customers this summer and to make a service more broadly available later in the year.
