With Kona Site Defender, the e-commerce company can protect itself against online threat and minimize the risk of revenue loss

Akamai Technologies, a leading cloud platform for helping enterprises provide secure, high-performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, helps Schneider Versand to protect their online stores against a variety of web attacks. Schneider chose Akamai’s security solution Kona Site Defender to provide an optimal combination of protection and performance that translates into an excellent online experience at all times even during peak traffic without any additional investments in hard- or software. In this way, Schneider can benefit from significant cost savings as well as eliminate any potential negative brand impact incurred by web attacks.

Schneider Versand is Europe's largest specialist for brand promotional items. In December 2011 the company faced a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Due to the scale and sophistication of the attack, the open-source based Web server module previously in use was no longer able to cope. At its peak, the attack traffic reached 500,000 requests per second and resulted in Schneider having to take its stores offline for three days. In order to be better protected in future against such attacks, the company opted for Akamai’s Kona Site Defender. The solution drops malicious traffic before it hits the corporate data center.

"Security is key for an online business and no concessions are acceptable. Akamai provides us with effective protection against DDoS attacks," said Henning Dürkop, IT-Coordinator e-Commerce, Schneider Versand. "With Kona Site Defender we ensure that attack traffic is blocked at an early stage. We are prepared for extensive attacks and can minimize the risk of revenue loss.”

Akamai Professional Services supported Schneider with the implementation of Kona Site Defender. The ongoing cooperation with the Akamai service team ensures that an appropriate and efficient defense scenario for online threat can be found quickly. Kona Site Defender leverages the distributed infrastructure of the Akamai Intelligent Platform™ which consists of more than 127,000 servers worldwide and provides a range of options to react, thus helping to maintain the business continuity in any situation.

"Performance is crucial for any online business in order to keep visitors on the site and increase conversion rate,” outlined Michael Heuer, Vice President and Country Manager Central Europe, Akamai. "Akamai’s Cloud-based security services deliver vital support to e-commerce companies enabling their visitors to always have the best possible online experience – even during traffic peaks. Kona Site Defender provides comprehensive security without compromising site performance and availability. So the online stores are always up and running for customers – without any additional investment into enterprise infrastructure."
