Special Olympics World Summer Games Leverages Akamai To Deliver A High-Quality Web Experience
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and applications online, today announced that Special Olympics, an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities, will use the Akamai Media Delivery Solution to support the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games online.
Taking place in China, this is the first time the games will be held in Asia, and only the second time they are being held outside the United States. Special Olympics will offer its global audience a world-class Web experience featuring live and on-demand streaming of the games. The webcast of the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games will include coverage of the over 3,000 gold medals to be distributed.
Akamai was the leading choice to provide the Web performance, scalability and security needed to handle a global online event of this magnitude. Having served as the content delivery provider for the official sites of the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Akamai has significant experience in supporting online Olympic coverage. In 2004, Akamai's global streaming network was utilized by leading broadcasters throughout Europe for the delivery of live and archived footage from Athens. And, during the first five days of the 2006 Torino Olympics Winter Games, Akamai handled a total of more than five million live and on-demand streams, amounting to over 78 terabytes of data.
"This is a landmark event for us and one we are very proud to host in the People's Republic of China," said Peter Wheeler, Executive Vice President, Special Olympics International. "This event is being made available on the Internet to ensure that eager sports enthusiasts the world over get to see the events as they happen. To provide such vast reach and scalability, Akamai was the natural choice. We know that Akamai has handled many of the largest sports events on the Internet, and we are confident they will stand by us as we hold the torch high for these athletes."
"It is our privilege to be chosen by Special Olympics," said Brad Rinklin, vice president of marketing, Akamai. "The Internet is the perfect medium to complement the Games, allowing for information to be shared and exchanged around the world. Special Olympics brings together a global community, and we are thrilled to help deliver the excitement of the competitions."
Leveraging Akamai's global computing platform of over 25,000 servers, Special Olympics will have the scalability on demand to support visitor interest. Akamai's integrated reporting tools will also provide the site with real-time business intelligence to effectively measure Web traffic.
