The company’s hotel brands include NH Hotels, which are three and four-stars urban hotels, practical, comfortable and in excellent locations. They also include NH Collection, premium hotels that catch guests by surprise, offering more than they expected, located in major capitals across Europe and America. nhow are establishments feature new architecture, design and modern luxury by prestigious international architects and interior designers, and the Hesperia brand represents holiday hotels in privileged surroundings.
The Group relies heavily on information technologies, especially the Internet – a critical and strategic sales channel – to further the company’s activities. In fact, the Internet has become the second-highest revenue-generating channel for the Hotel Group, second only behind the voice channel.
NH Hotel Group needed to enhance its site performance due to the growing demand for its online content. The company had been building and presenting multiple versions of its website to provide access via tablets and smartphones. In addition, the NH Hotel Group website experienced an increase in traffic, both from malicious robots and attacks that could cause downtime, as well as from major search engine bots. To avoid this and increase consumer satisfaction levels, NH Hotel Group wanted to improve site performance, and strengthen Web security. It also wanted to find a way to simplify the management of its site while still satisfying site visitors on any device. Moreover, it wanted to provide an outstanding Web experience to site visitors without increasing its IT infrastructure.
NH Hotel Group needed to address three goals to satisfy its requirements:
Going with Market Leaders
Telefónica, as NH Hotel Group’s long-term strategic partner, and Akamai suggested Akamai’s solutions, namely Akamai Dynamic Site Accelerator (DSA), Kona Site Defender (KSD) and Akamai Media Services. After a thorough evaluation of how the solutions addressed the company’s requirements in terms of cost and quality, the hotel group decided to implement them on its website in 2011.
“For a long time, we had been evaluating solutions that would protect our site from Internet threats. Telefónica’s and Akamai’s solutions perfectly satisfied our needs, and the results have been very positive,” said Victoriano Castro, IT Infrastructure Manager and Technical Head for the e-Commerce Portal for NH Hotel Group.
“NH Hotel selected those providers because of their strong market presence. With Akamai, we are taking advantage of the flexibility of the Akamai platform and the company’s leadership in content delivery. Plus, Akamai allows us to provide high performance anywhere, anytime and from any device so visitors have a consistent experience. As for Telefónica, it provides us with a reliable and efficient Internet connectivity and site hosting,” explains Castro.
With these solutions in place, NH Hotel has enough scalability to deliver more content to its site visitors without the need to build up its IT infrastructure.
Ensuring Better Reliability from the Start
Even during the implementation process, Telefónica ensured the normal operation of the hotel reservation portal. Now the hotel chain’s site visitors enjoy reliable, uninterrupted site access. At the same time, Akamai services offload the company’s origin servers by 75%, allowing NH Hotel Group to save infrastructure costs now and in the future.
This has been possible because of Akamai’s computing platform comprising thousands of servers deployed around the world that helps ensure optimum performance anywhere, anytime and from any device. This server platform, combined with Telefónica’s IP network, offers a better quality of service for visitors to NH Hotel Group’s website.
Improving the eCommerce Experience
The eCommerce department is the one that benefits most from the solutions offered by Telefónica and Akamai. It realizes better search engine ranking, better site reliability and faster page loads. Plus, thanks to the solution features such as geolocalization, it can launch and run marketing campaigns adapted to its audience.
Telefónica and Akamai provide NH Hotel Group a unique care interface through which the hotel chain’s IT group can input all demands and queries about the Telefónica and Akamai services. In addition, the hotel company relies on specialists from both organizations to adapt services to their specific business needs. “Any time we faced a new challenge, they offered the most appropriate solutions in a very timely manner. This is a distinguishing and critical factor for us,” explains Castro.
Since 2011, NH Hotel Group has continued to use more capabilities offered by these services, adapting functionalities to the growing development of NH Hotel Group’s activity. It has also as added other services from Akamai, including Akamai Site Failover, a solution for business continuity, Web Application Firewall (WAF), Mobile Detect and Redirect, and Content Targeting, to name a few. “When we have a new need – even a complex one – Akamai always provides us with a solution that meets it,” concludes Castro.
