Core sites provide compute, storage, database, and other services needed to run AI inference workloads and cloud native applications. They are integrated into Akamai’s global network and are built for highly scalable, performance-sensitive workloads such as:
Streaming: Media storage and transcoding function well in core sites due to their heavy compute requirements, large storage, and system of record data.
Ecommerce: Product catalog database, orders and payments, back-end APIs, and microservices require strong consistency, transaction processing, and centralized control.
- Gaming: Player accounts, matchmaking logic, and analytics sit in core sites due to their persistent state and need for global coordination.
Teams start in core sites for full-stack scale and centralized control, then extend into distributed sites when they need to place workloads closer to users for lower latency, or within specific geographies to meet data residency and regulatory requirements.
