Europages Leverages Akamai to Accelerate Web Traffic Performance
Akamai, the leading global service provider for accelerating content and applications online, today announced that Europages, the European Business Directory, has adopted Akamai's Web Application Accelerator and Dynamic Site Accelerator solutions to improve its web traffic performance at www.europages.com which can be viewed by customers of the service in 26 languages. Leveraging Akamai's services, the Europages website can now handle peaks in query traffic irrespective of the time or place the connection is made. In fact, since becoming an Akamai customer, europages.com has halved its response times in China, Japan, and the USA and is now available 24/7 in all its major markets.
The Europages International Business Directory is Europe's leading professional directory and features its most dynamic import and export businesses - 700,000 in total - spanning all sectors and operating in 35 different countries. In 2006, Europages recorded 27 million visits and 122 million business searches from 218 countries, with a total of 278 million pages viewed.
"As providers of a service which has become integral to so many organisations across the world, it was imperative that we were able to find a solution that would not only enable us to respond to our users' requests in the best possible time - regardless of their location - but also that we be able to maintain our highly regarded brand image," explained Thierry Cohen-Solal, CTO of Europages.
Henri d'Oriola, Director of Operations for South Europe at Akamai, said: "Europages is one of Europe's most high profile online services so it is simply not an option for its website to have any downtime or lack of performance. Akamai's network and technology take the load off origin websites, enabling our customers, like Europages, to feel assured that their online users get the best availability and performance the web has to offer."
Akamai's Web Application Accelerator and Dynamic Site Accelerator are dedicated services for improving the performance of web-based applications and were created to enable customers to leverage the full complement of benefits afforded by the globally distributed Akamai platform. These services aim to provide users all over the world with enhanced, consistent performance. In order to accelerate the dynamic web transactions of its clients, Akamai employs a number of market leading solutions:
Dynamic routing of user requests to an optimal Akamai server, which enables Akamai to adapt to new Internet network conditions in real time, thereby reducing the impact of problem spots, which slow down web delivery, and improving the availability of client applications.
Route-optimization technology, which enables Akamai to bypass problem spots on the Internet and redirect them onto fast and reliable transaction servers through the network.
Connection acceleration technology, which offers a wide range of functions including a compression device, long-lived server-server connections, pre-fetching of content, and optimisation of transport protocols.
Akamai draws on an infrastructure of more than 23,000 proxy servers spread out among approximately 70 countries and interconnected to nearly 1,000 web server networks. This platform system is designed to accelerate content delivery and reduce Internet application response time. In addition, and of particular advantage to Europages, the Akamai network can absorb the traffic generated by ‘crawlers' which use up a large part of the site's resources to the detriment of ‘genuine' visitors who want to search for information.
