Siemens Industry accelerates delivery of SharePoint application worldwide significantly with Akamai Web Application Accelerator
The Siemens Industry Sector, a division of Siemens AG, is the world’s leading supplier of innovative and environmentally friendly products and solutions for industrial customers. With its IT-based integration of product planning and production, Siemens Industry is the only supplier worldwide that can accelerate manufacturer processes at every stage of the value chain. For many products, this reduces time-to-market by up to 50 percent, thus boosting customer competitiveness to unprecedented levels. Siemens Industry currently has more than 100,000 employees worldwide and is represented in nearly all countries. It comprises the Divisions Industry Automation, Drive Technologies and Customer Services as well as the Business Unit Metals Technologies.
Siemens Industry needed to meet three key requirements to support its objectives:
Ensure a successful global rollout of a central Web CMS: Siemens Industry wanted to provide information for pre-sales, sales and post sales on a single platform and ensure even users in remote regions could access it without delay.
Support growing Internet traffic volumes while reducing costs: Siemens Industry wanted to cost-effectively handle the growing number of login sessions and page views via a single data centre.
Fast delivery of SharePoint to users in China: To reduce page delivery time caused by China’s Internet censorship firewall, Siemens Industry wanted to deliver the pages from within China – without deploying a new data centre.
Turning to a Trusted Partner
Siemens Industry had been using Akamai’s cloud services since 2004, including solutions for accelerating web-based applications. Because the collaboration between the two companies had expanded over the years, it was natural for Siemens Industry to use Akamai’s Web Application Accelerator (WAA) solution for the delivery of its SharePoint application. “We needed a solution that could deliver our application quickly around the world, even in distant markets far from our data centre in Germany,” explains Hans-Jürgen Bode, Head of Web-based Services (Industry Automation IT), Siemens AG.
A number of features made the WAA solution perfectly suited for Siemens Industry’s needs. With its pervasive, highly distributed cloud optimization platform comprising of more than hundred thousands of servers, Akamai is able to deliver all types of applications quickly and reliably over the Internet. Plus a combination of dynamic caching, routing and connection optimization and special cloud security technologies further enhance delivery. Because the solution ensures that content is delivered from Akamai CDN servers located closest to website visitors, it reduces web application response times.
“Akamai enabled us to reach our global customers without the need to undertake significant internal infrastructure build-out,” says Bode.
Scaling On Demand as Needed
With Akamai’s WAA solution, Siemens Industry can keep up with ever-increasing traffic demands. In fact, since deploying WAA, it has supported annual traffic growth of 50% and handled a monthly data volume of 2.5 TB. This enables the company to address even unpredictable Internet traffic spikes and provide users with unrestricted access to web applications and a fast, reliable web experience.
“Superior performance is crucial for ensuring that we meet the needs of customers, partners and employees,” explains André Graf, Head of CoC Internet Intranet + Gruppe Online Marketing, Siemens AG. “With Akamai, we can offer a predictable user experience, even in the face of increasing Internet traffic. This strengthens our position in the international automation market.” Graf continues, “With Akamai’s WAA solution, we are able to create the framework for an optimal experience worldwide for users of our SharePoint application.”
Circumventing a Critical Situation in China
The significant improvement in web performance had a particularly positive impact on service delivery in China, where the censorship firewall had resulted in response times that were considerably lower than in other regions. In fact information was frequently delayed or lost. By using Akamai’s WAA solution, Siemens Industry was able to cut content delivery times by 50% for users in China.
Mobile and E-commerce Solutions on the Radar Screen
Following the successful experience with SharePoint delivery, Siemens Industry is considering broadening its collaboration with Akamai to address the increasing use of mobile devices. Akamai streaming video solutions would enable the marketing division to offer additional multimedia content such as product videos and to provide also mobile users with access to all web content. If this proves successful, it is likely that e-commerce solutions via mobile clients will follow. “With Akamai’s range of services for optimizing the delivery of content and applications to a range of viewing platforms, we can easily deliver the experience our users demand,” concludes Graf.
