Livery Delivers a Seamless Low Latency Streaming Experience with Help from Akamai
Our new normal has ushered in the advent of hybrid events — a mix of in-person and virtual events. This has made seamless live streaming with active participation of the audience, both live and remote, more important than ever. Amsterdam-headquartered company Livery is an end-to-end SaaS solution running on the Akamai content distribution network (CDN), which is perfectly suited for interactive sports, interactive learning, and live commerce productions. We’re delighted that they have chosen to work with us to deliver the experience their clients have come to love.
Interactive live streaming
The new buzz phrase of 2022 will be “interactive live streaming.” This is defined as “real-time broadcasts, in which the structured actions of the participants affect the content of the live-stream.” Organizations in the West have solved the initial challenges of live streaming, and are now searching for solutions to maximize the potential of live events. By improving interactive narratives, a trend inspired by the East, where static viewers become active participants, viewer retention is increased, as is the reach and the average revenue per viewer. Traditional second screen solutions achieved a viewer engagement of 5%–20%, but by merging video and interaction into a single experience, the user engagement increases to 80%–95%. These numbers are based on the analytical data collected by the Livery team and are also seen at social video platforms.
Livery is a spin-out from Ex Machina group, a company also based in the city center of Amsterdam. They are one of the leading companies in second screen technology. Their technology has been used by most of the major broadcasters around the globe. Availability of the CMAF standard was the reason to create Livery. This was opening the opportunity to make a product of low-latency interactive streaming that combined high- quality, affordable, and scalable video with state-of-the art interactive tools. With SaaS pricing starting as low as US$300 per month, this brings previously complicated and expensive high-quality interactive productions within reach of almost every organization. Livery’s interactive video cloud is the first end-to-end interactive live streaming solution powered by the Akamai CDN.
Akamai’s CDN services were born from a challenge posed by World Wide Web founder Tim Berners-Lee, to solve what came to be known as the “World Wide Wait.” Akamai pioneered edge computing more than 20 years ago by developing sophisticated techniques to route web traffic, getting content from centrally located servers to early internet users faster. Supporting CMAF-based low-latency video is a logical next step in the evolution of our CDN.
Speaking about the collaboration with Akamai, Frank van Oirschot (CCO and co-founder of Livery) said, “Akamai CDN offers superior scalability and quality for CMAF-based services and we’re delighted to work together to bring about the next chapter in online video and live streaming.”
