The challenge

Akamai’s website handles high traffic volumes across multiple domains. Each property has its own “conversion event,” from ecommerce purchases to business-to-business (B2B) form fills and cloud compute sign‑ups. Google's Core Web Vitals have become the industry benchmark for page performance, with metrics like Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) directly measuring how quickly users see meaningful content. 

LCP is where content delivery makes or breaks the experience: Every millisecond spent fetching images, videos, and page resources from the origin adds up. For a global brand like Akamai that serves customers in more than 130 countries, ensuring fast asset delivery across every region isn't just about user experience, it's also about maintaining search visibility, competitive advantage, and holding ourselves to the same standard we set for customers. 

In other words, if we don’t deliver a fast, resilient experience on our own site, why would anyone trust us to do it for theirs?

The challenge was clear:

  • Ensure fast page loads to support SEO and engagement

  • Maintain resiliency so the brand never experiences downtime

  • Protect diverse conversion paths while keeping the experience seamless

One of our engineers put this challenge into simpler words: “From a performance standpoint, our objective is to make the website faster.”

The solution: Integrated offload and performance

We quickly realized offload and performance aren’t separate stories; they’re two sides of the same coin. This is a lesson we see repeatedly with customers: Reducing the burden on origin servers while delivering content closer to users is one of the most effective ways to improve real-world performance.

By delivering content from the edge, we directly improve time to first byte (TTFB), the foundation of strong LCP scores and fast user experiences. These aren’t abstract metrics; they’re the difference between user engagement or the abandonment of a session. Here’s how we implemented it:

Technical optimizations

  • DNS onboarding to route traffic efficiently from the start

  • Modern protocols like HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 for faster connections

  • Compression (Gzip, Brotli) to reduce payload size and speed up transfers 

  • Caching strategies that serve static assets from the nearest Akamai edge location, eliminating origin round trips

  • SureRoute optimization to find the fastest path for uncached content that must reach the origin

Each of these optimizations directly reduces TTFB and improves LCP. But speed alone isn’t enough because the fastest site in the world is useless if it isn’t available.

Resiliency enhancements

  • Static site failover to ensure continuity during outages

  • Backup origins to prevent downtime

  • Traffic management to reroute requests seamlessly

Together, these measures deliver speed, stability, and peace of mind. They ensure that performance holds up not only on a good day, but also under real-world stress.

The results

By integrating offload and performance, we achieved:

  • Faster load times and improved LCP scores
