As the growth of AI rapidly accelerates the demand for computing capacity worldwide, our conversation must extend beyond simply adding infrastructure. We also need to think critically about the energy required to support such expansion.

At Akamai, we recognize that scaling our digital presence must go hand in hand with deepening our commitment to sustainability. Clean power is not just an extra consideration; it is fundamental to how we build and operate the future of the internet.

Scaling responsibly in the age of AI

Finding viable, scalable renewable energy solutions requires looking beyond conventional approaches and adapting to the unique geographical realities of every region we serve. It means stepping up as environmental stewards while keeping the digital world connected and resilient.

This mission drives us to seek forward-thinking partnerships that turn real-world infrastructure challenges into opportunities for impactful change, continuously bringing new clean energy generation directly to the markets in which we operate.

As we expand our distributed cloud infrastructure across the globe, we are dedicated to ensuring that our renewable energy procurement grows alongside it. That is why we are thrilled to announce a new Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with EDP APAC, the Asia-Pacific arm of the global renewable energy company EDP, to enable generation of clean electricity in Singapore.

Unique challenges, unique solutions

Singapore is a challenging market for corporate renewable energy procurement. Building sprawling utility-scale solar farms or wind parks on this highly urbanized, land-constrained island nation is simply not a viable option.

When our team first confronted this challenge, we knew finding a workable solution wouldn't be easy. Rather than seeing it as a roadblock, however, it motivated us to think differently and pushed us to find the right project tailored to the local environment.

To overcome this hurdle, we had to get creative. This VPPA, executed with advisory support from 3Degrees, allows us to procure the clean energy attributes generated by a unique portfolio of rooftop solar systems installed across 27 different operational locations in Singapore.

This transaction is a massive milestone for our renewable energy portfolio in a few ways:

  • It is our first VPPA deal in the APAC region.

  • It marks a renewable energy deal in our second international market.

  • It is the first, and currently only, rooftop solar deal in our global portfolio.

Delivering real-world impact

Together, these rooftop installations generate thousands of megawatt-hours of clean power every year — delivering a genuinely meaningful step forward in reducing local grid emissions.

For our team, though, the real reward goes far beyond numbers on a page: We proved that, even in the most challenging landscapes, human creativity and a shared purpose can unlock sustainable solutions we once thought were out of reach.

Beyond reducing our own operational footprint, this agreement actively supports Singapore’s national efforts to expand solar deployment under its Green Plan 2030.

By tapping into previously unutilized commercial and industrial rooftop space, the initiative demonstrates a scalable and highly effective model for driving local renewable generation in a land-constrained market, directly advancing regional sustainability goals while building a more resilient energy grid.

A critical step on our path to net zero

At Akamai, our overarching objective remains achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. To reach this milestone, the goal is to power our global operations with 100% renewable energy over that same period.  Not only is our strategy grounded in emissionality to maximize impact, but we also want our renewable investments to be as close to our actual power consumption as possible.

The distributed nature of our platform means we are actively pursuing opportunities to invest in even more wind and solar projects across the globe to ensure proximity and additionality.

This rooftop VPPA with EDP APAC is the direct result of that strategy. By investing in locally generated clean electricity where we operate, we are demonstrating to our customers that sustainability is a shared responsibility.  When we lower our carbon footprint, we lower theirs too.

FAQ

Akamai has executed a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with EDP APAC, supported by advisory firm 3Degrees. The deal allows Akamai to procure the clean energy attributes generated from a distributed portfolio of rooftop solar installations across 27 operational locations in Singapore.

Singapore is a densely urbanized, land-constrained island nation where traditional, large-scale utility solar farms or wind parks are not feasible. Using available commercial and industrial rooftop space provides a scalable, innovative solution tailored to the country's unique geographical constraints.

Akamai is committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its global operations by 2030 and powering its platform and operations with 100% renewable energy. This project reflects Akamai's focus on emissionality and additionality — investing in new, locally generated clean power as close to actual consumption sites as possible.

By unlocking decentralized solar generation across commercial and industrial rooftops, the initiative directly supports Singapore's national efforts to scale solar deployment under its Green Plan 2030 while enhancing grid resiliency.
